I planned to get recommendation letters from my math teacher and Latin teacher, but U of Chicago requires one rec from a social studies/English. My APUSH and AP Language teachers from last year don't know me that well, and it's not like I can ask my new teachers to write me a recommendation letter..!

I don't want to send out any decent, plain recommendation letters.. I understand why Chicago is doing this, but I don't know what to do! This is seriously discouraging me from applying there.

Call the admissions office and describe your dilemma. They have adcom representatives for the different areas in the country. Find yours and call, or simply call and they will tell you.

IMO, the latin would fall under social studies, but I would definately call admissions just to be sure.
Also, kudos to you for getting this done so early, are you applying Early Action or are you just something silly like organized

Just call and I'm sure you can work something out. The social studies/English thing is just to make sure that science oriented person doesn't submit all science/math recs. They want to get an idea of your well-roundedness, so to speak.

admissions counselors on above link. However, Chicago is pretty clear on their app that a foreign language rec can only be submitted as supplemental material, so not sure how flexible they will be. Given the fact that they use a seminar-style of class discussion, they want and need students who contribute to the classroom. Thus, IMO, it does not bode well that your history and english teachers from last year don't know you very well.

I emailed the regional rep about 2 weeks ago, and he is on vacation until the 29th. I guess if I really want to apply early to U of Chicago, I'll have to suck it up and get 3 recs (math, Latin, English).
