As you guys know, UChicago requries rec letters from a social studies/english teacher and a science/math teacher.

Then, is a foreign language (Japanese, Spanish, etc) considered "social studies"?
Argh.. This is a huge problem. Will UChicago admission people throw away my application forms if I get a rec from a language teacher?

The official line is that foreign language does not count as English or social studies... and this may just be a hunch, but it probably doesn't fall under math or science, either. The other official line (but one that flies more under the radar) is that an application is considered complete even if it has only one recommendation in, because humans make mistakes and mail sometimes does get lost.

That aside, what I suggest you do is get the required recommendations written for you, and send in a third rec from your foreign lang teacher as a supplement. That way, you don't have to worry about the admissions officers throwing away anything, or getting mad, or marking you down for not following directions (plus, they don't even do those sort of things. Contrary to what imagination likes to conjure, the counselors are very nice, very laid back, and not loath to accept Facebook friend requests :)). And don't worry. You'll be fine.

Psychology can be either a social science or a natural science (and according to some, some social sciences like psycology and sociology are under the umbrella of natural science anyway).

I would say that a psych reccomendation would be fine for either category.

TheRisenLilith, Libby addressed this in the "Watch out, it's an admissions counselor" thread above. In post #415 on page 28 of the thread she writes:

"Recommendations -- we understand when teachers leave or your school places restrictions on the number of teachers you can ask for recommendations... and you had to request your recommendations at the end of your junior year. We've seen it all. You should still apply.
