Im in deep doo doo with the financial aid. (must appeal)

I have Cal Grant A, which has been confirmed. Only stuff I lost was approximately $4039 from the UCSD Grant and $2003 from Work Study. And now they want me to pay $3609 out of pocket and the Parent Plus Loan doubled. Ahhhhhh!

@AdrenalineJunkie
I’m in the same situation as you. I emailed them last week about it and they replied same day. I just emailed them again about it last night and i’m still waiting for a reply.

@xxmsp91
Is previous years, Cal Grant B was considered better than A. Cal grant A pays for tuition for all 4 years. Cal Grant B pays $1551 for the first year, and the next three will pay for tuition plus $1551. Usually UCSD will pay for the rest of tuition with a UCSD grant for freshmens to make it more affordable. But since tuition recently went up, some are saying Cal Grant A may be better for some. You dont need to worry about this though since UCSD automatically picks which would be better for you.

Send in an appeal. It will not hurt you. Like i said above, UCSD will pick which is better for you. If they give you cal grant B and you still dont want it, just send them a letter and they’ll change it back for you. I think the only thing the appeal will do is award you with the UCSD grant and work study if you qualify.

I just received this email, even though I already got my official financial aid award about a month ago.

Can we reject federal work-study if we are given it?

I’ve been keeping up with this thread because I’ve had the exact same problem as xxmsp91 (got the same awards too)

Just a few minutes ago I got an email saying my appeal was rewarded. I checked and everything was pretty much what I thought it should be (almost exactly the same as my preliminary award notice).

I went from having about 20K in loans to only 5800 :D

I was also told I would have to wait until early September, so it was a surprise so early. but I’m glad.

So here’s to everyone else worrying! I’m sure everything should be alright :D

(To be specific. My Parent PLUS was reduced from 15K to a measly $300, and I was given a UCSD grant and Work Study)

@kforkaryn: You definitely can :P

@Terkaderk

Thats GREAT news. I’m so eager to see how mine went too now. Hopefully yours being approved means they have the funds. What was your appeal letter based upon? When did you turn in your appeal?

dude zergs suck unless you rush.

protoss ftw

I sent my appeal in early June. I got the same exact e-mail adl0816 did up there.

It was pretty much based on “Hey. No notification. How was I supposed to know. DISAPPOINTMENT IN YOUR SYSTEM. I can’t pay help me :[”

Well. It was that, spread out into about a 3-4 paragraph e-mail, haha.

@boboman911: Zerg rushes are so satisfying. I need to pick up SC2 before heading to UCSD…even though there’s no LAN option. Hmmmm

yessss :slight_smile: good news makes me happy haha.

@adl0816
congrats!!! hopefully, this approval will be first of many to come for the rest of us. fingers crossed
wow, ur lucky, u must be really relieved.

@boboman911
i shall own u in sc2… very soon. FOR THE SWARM! :D

i just checked my email. I GOT MY APPEAL APPROVED… WOOWOTOWOTWOTOWOTOWOWT

WHOOOO!!! :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D::D:D:D:D

Congrats! I still havent gotten mine yet, but i sent it july 1st, so I’m slightly after you guys =

YAY CONGRATULATIONS! I sent my stuff in June 30, but I didn’t know to send the appeal until July 30th. So I’m way after everyone :frowning:
Good luck AndrewL!

Also, xxmsp91, did you get EVERYTHING back?!

i just checked rite now cuz, when i checked the email i got from the FAO the ucsd website didnt let me check my aid status on financial aid tool cuz it was past midnight.

i got everything back except for one thing… blue and gold opportunity plan… is that a seperate package we’re suppose to receive later?
the ucsd grant and the blue and gold opportunity plan are two seperate awards right?

Hmm that’s weird I sent mine in in mid May and haven’t gotten anything yet.

i did some extra research on the blue and gold opportunity plan. when i saw my preliminary award notice, it said i will get around 11k for ucsd grant and opportunity plan will cover 10k of that award. So, at first, i thought ucsd grant and the blue and gold opportunity plan was two separate awards, so i thought iwas getting 11k and the additional 10k.

it turns out that the opportunity plan is the UCs pledge to cover the FEEs and TUITION only. its not additional money, its just a guarantee that the FAO will cover the estimated 12k tuition of the UCs. so ucsd grant IS basically the blue and gold opportunity plan… any other additional estimates that you will be spending on food and housing could be covered by additional grants, but it looks like u would still need to take work study and loans.

correct me if im wrong cuz im not so sure about all of this yet.

@xxmsp

I believe thats correct. I was confused at first as well but its basically a plan to cover all expenses with grants, loans, and workstudy.

I’m still so anxious about my awards ><

I’m trying to type my appeal but i do not know how to write it so i do not offend the FAO. Should I let them know that I am disappointed in their system? Help?

I wouldnt. It’s basically your fault for not looking into it. They’re not in charge of informing you of deadlines, you’re in college now.
