I'm late, I'm late, I'm late...

For a very important date!!!!

Haha, okay, so just recently I was looking at some private schools for high school because my high school I mostly likely will be attending is a public school. Plus it is in Hawaii which is known for... umm, well, public schools aren't too good here, so I want to change that. I wanted to apply for some boarding schools (to gain more independence, etc) and wanted you guys to chance me (please!). I know that I am pretty (REALLY) late for admissions but would still like to try anyways, plus I need financial aid... :(

So here are the schools: (in order of preference)
~Cate Academy
~Thacher Academy
~Stevenson Boarding School
~Blair Academy

Here is some stuff about me:
Previous Schools (my dad is in the army, we've moved a lot)
~PATANA International School (K-1)
~Evans Mills Elementary School (Public) (2)
~Augustinian Academy (Private) (3-5)
~Mililani Middle School (Public) (6-8)

Places I've lived:
-Virginia
-Hawaii (currently living here)
-California
-Thailand
-New York

GPA:
4.0's for the final grade and semester grades... Most of the time one B a year...

EC:
~Piano (Five years)
~Violin (three years in school orchestra, 5th chair)
~Soccer (3 years, five seasons, AYSO)
~Junior History Day
~Junior Science Fair
~~~
So, what do you think? I'm think I'll be waitlisted, since I'm late... But could some one explain what that process is? Also feel free to tell me about the schools (community, classes, environment, music lessons, sports). I'll probably finish my apps in March and do interviews/visits plus the SSAT in April...
Chance me please (and thank you)!!!!!!!
~ZooYork
you mean cate school, not academy, right?
I’d say that you have a pretty good chance at those schools, because they are not super selective.
Not super selective? Thacher is a shade under 20%. Not exactly a cake-walk.
Exoveerotch: Haha, yeah, sorry. I meant Cate school. What schools did you apply/go to?
ThacherParent: Yeah, I saw the stats on the website. :frowning: Not good for me, especially since I’m late. What was your kids’ interview like? How does s/he like the school?
why don’t you look at the punahou school my mom went there it is the best school in hawaii idk about how selective it is howver
Well, I know the school, but I dunno about applying. I’d really like to get out of Hawaii, I feel like I’ve been here too long. Haha, but if my parents don’t let me apply for a boarding school I’ll probably look at Punahou or MidPac or something. Although I’m not sure if they accept late applications…
Just to clear things up, it’s Thacher school, not Thacher Academy; Stevenson school not Stevenson Boarding School.
I don’t think either Thacher and Cate accepts late applications. Good luck with your studying anyway!
If you’re applying for '10-11, honestly, I don’t think you have any chance if you’re submitting your app that late
Ah, well, I’ll just be optimistic then. :)
I know a kid who is Applying super late ( he decided in Jan )to Taft and Loomis and L’ville on late applications but his parent’s are super connected so…
like on the board of trustees of our school
Wow, lucky dude. Haha, no connections for me.
Well, frankly speaking this late of an application is almost always frowned upon. It shows that you are not really interested in any of those schools, but are applying as a formality. To me, it seems like you had a good chance to get in if hadn’t applied this late. I can’t say for certain though. One peice of advice I will give you is, unless you’ve already sent you’re application it won’t even reach in time (they may consider it early for next year though). If you’ve just started to write everything, then I reccomend you forget it, and just focus on building up your profile.
Good luck though.
i sent my application to loomis chaffee just a few days ago
well loomis is an east coast school. there are plenty of good east coast schools that’ll at least look at your application.
but um, if you get into cate or thacher? holy crap that’d be awesome. those should both be on the top of your list. looks like you have a great application… and i’m assuming you’ll be applying as a freshmen, but even if you don’t get in this year (just because it’s rolling although if you’re a freshmen, i’d say, you still have good chances as a rolling applicant) you’ll definitely get in next year in the normal app round, as a sophomore (you could choose to repeat freshmen year. if you don’t mind doing five years of high school, i’d recommend that).
but, one piece of advice… applying rolling tends to be for really desperate people (like me) who NEED to get in for next year. luckily, since i’ve already attended boarding school for a year and a half, so i feel informed enough to find schools i really like. whatever boarding school you choose is going to end up being your home (you can always transfer, but it’s nice to stay in the same school. i’m international, so i know what it’s like to move around a lot). so, if you’re applying rolling, try not to rush into decisions. if you feel like you can make a more informed decision next year on where you want to go, i’d go with that.
okay, hope that helped :D
Hey everyone,
Thanks for posting! :smiley: Right now I’m just thinking of Cate and Thacher, but more so Cate, just cause of distance wise. I think that east coast schools are just too far away. :frowning: I hope I at least have a chance but I dunno. My mom is really worrying about the money problem. She says that its too expensive and we can’t afford it, etc. Anyone else had problems like this? And how did you resolve them? I know about financial aid, but being so late it seems really chancey to depend on it… Anyways, say as you please. Thanks for all your help~
i would apply for financial aid. again, like i said, worse comes worse you can apply next year. they’ll give you a financial aid package to your needs, usually. see if it’s too expensive, you might as well apply for financial aid.
besides. your application is impressive.
Thanks a lot Clay123456. Your comments make me feel much better. :slight_smile: I’ll tell my mom more about the financial aid, and how it works… Maybe that will help convince her.
yeah. i mean, go for it.
even if you DO get in, it’s not binding. so if you decide not to go, it’s all good.
Yeah. I guess so. I think I’m only going to apply to Thacher and Cate though… Since its closer to home… Which means is less expensive (air travel wise). I’m going to take the SSAT in April. Any tips?
for the SSAT, i would definitely recommend since you have quite a while till your test, study vocab! the vocab and analogies was my worst section and math was very general and pretty easy. for vocab, try wordlywise3000.com or sat vocab words. buy the ssat practice test from the site, it’s pretty helpful and gives a general idea to what the test is like. when you do the practice, i would suggest you set aside about 3 hours and take the test according to the time limits and see how you do. hope i helped :)
