I'm looking forward to meeting the 2007 candidates!

Mommyjosette,

I see that you were at the auditions that we were at! I wonder if we ran into you. Anyway, I see that you are from Florida? Where did you come from? I also wish we could have stayed longer but back to school and back to work. And, with the weather we are about to get, it sure would be nice to have stayed somewhere a bit warmer. Oh well... got to be thankful for what we have huh?

I know this is kind of off the subject but, I love that airport. I love the small intimate airports. Easy in and easy out. Just incase anyone else is flying for the next set of auditions.

There are tons of hotels so very close to the college also. Everything is very convenient, shopping, eating, malls, airport. I'm sure those of you that have not had an opportunity to visit the school yet will like like all of these things along with the school program, etc.

Also, I spoke with a very nice gentleman that had a daughter there auditioning as a transfer student. I don't know if you look at this site but if so, It was a pleasure talking with you and best of luck to your daughter.

Also, has anyone out there found out if there child was actually accepted to the school itself? It looks like we will have to wait even longer because when we went in to look, it said that we wouldn't find out about the college until March 28th. AHHHH!@ Long time to wait!

All,
I'm in complete agreement about the school and the people! My D and I were especially impressed with the campus itself, which was really beautiful. The dance facility was fabulous, and the cafe' and the dorms were great too. We walked around during down time between segments and met several very friendly and helpful students who let us look around the dorms and spoke with great pride about their school and it's programs. Best of luck to everyone this weekend!

So I had my audition Sunday and it is a weight lifted off my shoulders to have it over with...loved the campus just as much the second time around and of course the weather was wonderful and made houston look even more gross once i got home(like an hour ago) but yeah those of you who haven't auditioned yet: don't stress; it's an easy in and out process and they make you feel as comfortable as possible in such a stressful time...and i loved going to the sweeney rehearsal..can't believe how great it was even when it was the first dress..definitely some talented students up on that stage!! o and thank you michele for taking the time to make sure all our questions were answered and inviting us to the rehearsal. you and the rest of the faculty made the whole audition so much more pleasant with your friendliness and helpful advice..o well i probably don't make any sense because I've been travelling from audition to audition for 10 days and I'm going to get some sleep!
bye for now

Cindystamps4u,

When did your D apply to FSU? You may hear something before March 28 regarding her acceptance to the university itself. My D applied to FSU in the fall of her senior year and had an acceptance and an academic scholarship offer in hand by January. I don't remember the exact date, but it was before she auditioned on Jan 18 that year. I'll keep my fingers crossed for your D. Hopefully, she'll hear something from the university soon. She will not hear from the MT department until after their final audition. The faculty see all the candidates before making their selections.

Cindy,
It is too bad that we didn't know to try to meet on Sunday... What time was your D's audition? My D's was originally 6:30, bumped up to 5:45 and then thanks to Michelle and the kind folks at the college, 4:30. We left immediately for our 6+ hour drive back to Fort Lauderdale. Mapquest had said that it would be at least 7... thankfully, with only the min of stops, we beat the estimate.

The weather here has been raining and miserable since we arrived home. It's funny to us, it was cold on Sunday morning, freezing in fact, but still lovely. That is the main reason that my D has kept her auditions to the south. Our "thin blood" will take some adjusting much farther north... I am glad to hear that the airport is nice. If she ends up attending FSU, unless she comes home with friends, I would rather her fly home as drive that 6+ hours alone.

BTW my D's admission status says March 28th also...

How long after the last audition do you think they will begin notifying? Do you remember if Michelle said wheter or not the let the kids on the waiting list know that they were on the waiting list as opposed to simply rejected?

Nice talking to you in any event and hope your D had a great audition and good luck.

Dancersmom,

Thanks for the information. I think the reason it said March 28th is because the high school just sent my daughters transcripts and they were received a week ago. My daughter actually applied, I believe in December. So, I guess we'll just have to wait. I am guessing your daughter now is in the MT program at FSU. Does she love it? I think it sounds wonderful. I like the fact that it is small because of the individual attention. Such a great thing at such a BIG school. Anyway, time will tell if my daughter gets the priviledge.

Mommyjosette,

My daughter actually auditioned on Sat. Her appt. was originally for 4:40 and because there were some kids that didn't show, they were able to move the times up also so she got to audition at 3:26. I tell you, I feel so bad for the kids that are on the waitlist for an audition. I think there must have been at least 6 kids that didn't show up on Sat. and I believe Michele said that they have about 80 on the waitlist just to audition. I guess some people just don't realize how hard this whole process is and that them not canceling, robbed a few others from coming for an audition. That made me feel really bad.

So, you had a long drive too. Listen, my daughter and I were going to drive also because I couldn't find any inexpensive flights. It was going to be a 12 hour drive and I really was not looking forward to it but we were going to do it. But, I kept looking for flights and got tickets at the last minute on Thursday for us to fly! YIPPIE! I was dreading that drive.

As for the weather, I can totally understand what you are saying. On Sat. afternoon my daughter was like, I could get used to this weather. I said, yeah, I bet you could. Today, the kids were hoping for lots of snow. We really haven't had any snow this year and there was supposed to be a nice storm coming in today and tomorrow. But... nothing for us. I believe a bit north of us they will get a couple of inches but nothing like they have said we were going to get. So, off to school they went. Can you imagine living in Oswego (sp.) NY? Is that unbelievable? I don't think I'd want to leave the house until July! HA!

So, I guess with the March 28th date must be the standard date or something. They probably have certain times when they look at the next batch of completed applications and that is the timeline we fell into.

As far as how long after the auditions? I don't know. I believe the next and last auditions are the weekend of the 24th. But, I guess unless the kids are accepted to the college, we'll never know if they might have been accepted to the MT program. And, I would imagine we will know right away about th wait list. They wouldn't send a rejection letter if they were still in the consideration mode right?

Oh, the stress, excitement, worry, hope, etc..... what a mix of emotions at this time huh?

Anyway, I will keep you posted on how my D makes out and let me know if you hear anything. Actually, if we get any good news, you'll be able to hear us scream all the way to Ft. Lauderdale...... and we are in Fredericksburg, VA.

Cindy,

Yes, my D is a BFA MT student at FSU. She is a junior this year. (Look under my posting name and you will see this information :) .) She loves the school. One of the things that attracted us to the program when my D and I were doing her college search is its size. My D wanted to attend school at a large university, but she also wanted to be a part of a small group of MT students. We liked the idea of a small MT program. My H and I felt that our D would get more individual attention. That has turned out to be the case. FSU has been a good fit for our D. I can hardly believe she'll be graduating next spring! The time has certainly flown.

Good luck to your D. I remember quite well how stressful my D's senior year was. A real mixed bag of emotions as you so aptly said. I hope that good news will be coming your way soon.

I just got my acceptance letter for the school itself, not school of theatre, but they offered me a place in the Summer Term. I have to give a response by March 14.
Does anyone know what this means if I were to get into the Music Theatre major? Would I have to take other classes in the summer and start the Music Theatre classes in the fall?
Also, do you think we will find out our status before March 14?
Thanks for any help!

Cool! I get to answer a couple of questions at once :-)

First, the important part:
I will mail out all of the letters on Feb. 27-28. Everyone who auditioned will get a letter. It will either be an acceptance, a denial or an invitation to be on the alternate (waiting) list. So, in answer to the post above: candidates placed on the alternate/waiting list will receive notification of that status at the same time as everyone else. We also don't wait for the University Admissions decision to notify candidates regarding the outcome of their audition.

All acceptances to the MT program are conditional upon acceptance to the University. Sometimes the University Admissions office will defer an academic decision until after the auditions are completed - hence the March 28th date you are seeing - it is the published date for the next round of decisions. Admissions is very good at communicating with the department regarding applicant status if we have accepted someone to Acting or Music Theatre. As always, I'm happy to work with anyone to make this process as painless as it can be.

Regarding a summer acceptance offer: those students will take two liberal studies courses during the last six weeks of the summer session. The goal of this early session is to give the student some schedule relief during the first freshman year. The actual Music Theatre curriculum does not begin until the fall semester. Music Theatre majors take 16-19 credit hours per semester, often in addition to rehearsal & performance responsibilities - even as freshmen. The six hours in the summer allows a student to slightly reduce his or her course load in the fall. Occasionally, we will have an incoming MT freshman who has been offered summer admission to the University, but that offer conflicts with a summer stock job. In that instance, sometimes I am able to work with Admissions in the students favor.

Michele

Do you only accept 10 - 12 to yield a class of 10 - 12 or are you accepting 10 - 12 to yield a smaller freshman class?

Thanks, All4FSU, for being such a great source of information. I have a couple of questions based on your last response.

Does this mean that if someone is borderline academically, they will hold them pending the audition result, and you can "fight" for someone you really want?

Regarding a summer acceptance offer
Is this generally offered to all incoming freshmen, or is there something academically that would warrant it?
We accept 10-12 to yield a class of 8-10 (8 actually being optimal, but yields are incredibly hard to predict, and 2 out of the last 3 years have yielded a class of 10) Our curriculum and philosophy of education is based on a small class.
Yes, this happens, but it is within very, very stringent limitations. Certain criteria must be met regardless. A student must be academically strong to be able to handle 16-19 credits per term along with production responsibilities. The School of Theatre also has a GPA requirement below which a student may not fall and remain a major so we like to be sure that MT students won't struggle academically.

There is something academically that warrants it, but I'm not going to begin to try and understand what that is. Admissions has all kinds of research they have done on predictors of student success, and they offer summer admission if a student fits a profile they have established of someone who would benefit from integrating into the University environment early.
That said - summer admission works really well for Acting & MT students for the reasons outlined above, and I can arrange it for students who want to participate.

Thanks Michele for all the quick responses. You don't understand how often I check this thread.

Dancersmom:

Okay, I've been reading these posts for years, and I only just realized the relation between you and your D. I have tap with her this year and I'm on the run crew for Sweeney right now. She's fantastic. Anyway, just thought I'd throw that out there--it's great that you're so supportive of other people's futures. Keep it up!

Hi Jinx,

My D just mentioned you on the phone last night . She said I would be surprised to learn that one of her classmates "knew" me from CC. I'm glad you've found this forum helpful. I learned a lot when my D was doing her college search and going through the audiiton process. I still pick up quite a bit of useful information from reading. I am happy to be in a position now to share some of what I have learned.

Thanks for your kind words about my D. We'll be in Tally this weekend to see "Sweeney" and to deliver birthday gifts. A certain D turned 21 on Valentine's Day. Maybe I'll get to meet you :)

Just wanted to drop a line and tell everyone that Sweeny Todd was AMAZING. S and I drove to Tall. to see the matinee yesterday and I was blown away! Dancersmom - was your D in the show? If so please tell her WOW! my s auditioned on the 10th and is anxiously awaiting word. Again tell your daughter to let everyone know that was involved with Sweeney that they were better than when we saw it on Broadway last year with Patti Lapone!!!!!!!!!

Mtboymom,

I'm glad you enjoyed the performance of Sweeney. My H and I saw it on Saturday evening and were very impressed. My D was in the ensemble and was the fight captain. (If you look in your program, you will see the ensemble/fight captain notation by one of the girl's names. You can then match the name with her photo.)

D feels very lucky to have had the opportunity to be in the show. She spent the fall semester overseas participating in FSU's London Theatre Experience. She was in London when auditions were held for this school year and when rehearsals for Sweeney Todd began in November. She was told that she would not be performing in any musicals this year for those reasons. She was thrilled when she got an e-mail in October informing her that she had been cast in the show. The stage manager mailed her the music and she began learning it on her own. She joined the rest of the cast when rehearsals resumed after Christmas break.

I hope that your S gets good news from his auditions soon!

I really would love to see Sweeny, but from the pictures I've seen of the production I'm amazed at just how detailed the set and the costumes are. Unbelievable. It surely is a giant leap going from High School to College in the realm of Music Theatre (especially coming from a dinky Catholic school).

I just want to wish all the final auditioners a very strong GOOD LUCK this weekend. I'm glad, just as much as you maybe, to have this weekend pass to finally let the results roll in.

Again,
GOOD LUCK!

^ Haha I second that about the sets compared to the dinky Catholic school! The set was AMAZING when I saw it at tech rehearsal. Where are these pictures you speak of?
