Our audition season begins this weekend. I am looking forward to meeting any CCers who are making the trip - please let me know who you are!

If you have any questions about the schedule or the audition itself, please do not hesitate to ask. You can post here or send me an e-mail or PM.

Hey Michele!
I met you when I came down to visit last march, and we talked about audition pieces and, I promise you, I will not be singing Mister Snow or Vanilla Ice Cream!

I will be auditioning on Sunday, February 11th--hopefully the weather will be nice. I look forward to seeing you again and wish me luck!

Jessica,
It will be nice to see you again! Luckily trends change as far as songs that are frequently used :-) This year will be different. What we love is to hear students sing the heck out of whatever they have selected!

Hey Michele! I talked to you also in March. I will be there Feb 10!!!! I'm extremely excited. Thanks for telling me about CC! I have been keeping up with it ever since our talk!

I don't know if anyone can answer this, but is acceptance based more or less on how you do in comparison to the rest of your peers that day, or throughout the audition? I know the answer would most likely be "the whole audition," but they have to have SOME idea who is in and who is out a few days after the audition, right?

Secondly, does anyone know if there will be a waiting list this year?

Acceptance is based on how you do in relation to everyone who auditions, however to some degree you are right. After each audition day we have a "for further consideration" list, but no decisions are made until we've seen everyone. After the very last audition we look at all the students we are considering and make decisions. At that point it gets incredibly difficult, which is why we structure our auditions so that we all see each and every candidate.

Yes, we do plan to have a waiting (alternate) list this year, although I am not yet sure how many candidates will be on it.

My daughter put Theater/Musical theater on the application however, she filled out the music program supplement to audition for Musical Theater. She is NOT a music major and wanted to apply under the theater program. Her audition is this weekend. What should she do?

Cindy,
Just come see me at check in and I will make sure she is all set. There will be a mix of BFA and BM candidates in the room and they all audition together. Often candidates aren't sure which track they prefer until they arrive (and it makes no difference for the purposes of getting in to MT.)
It would probably save her a few minutes that morning if you go to the web site below, print the BFA application, fill it out and bring it with you. I always have copies with me, but usually the candidates like to spend those first few minutes talking to students, stretching, etc - not filling out paperwork, LOL!

Thanks so much. Let me also ask one more thing. I see with the Theater application she should have had 3 recommendations, etc. one week prior to this audition. Can she bring all of this with her. She is in Chicago right now. Or, will this be too late. I understand the deadlines fully and understand if she cannot bring them with her. I just want to make sure we don't make this 12 hour drive just to be told she should have had these things in prior. Does that make sense. It's our fault that she missed the boat. Thanks again for all your assistance, I do appreciate it.

Cindy,
She can absolutely bring it with her! While we like to have it in advance, it's not essential to the process as long as we know she's coming. What we really want the most id for her to relax, have fun and have a great audition.

For the record, we would never deny a candidate the opportunity to audition just because something is missing from his/her file. The process of auditioning for Music Theatre programs is difficult and stressful enough.
I have applications to the BFA program on hand, and I recommend to all students that they always carry a headshot and resume.

Perfect, I know she will be thankful. She is very excited and loves auditioning so there you have it. You'll see Santina on Sat. Thanks again for all your help. It is really appreciated.

Michelle,
My d applied for the BM/Musical Theatrem however, she has decided that the BFA/Musical Theatre would be a better match for her. She has downloaded the appropriate form and will bring it to the auditions on Sat. All letters of recommendation have been sent in. Will she need more if she changes to the BFA?
Thanks,
Susan

Susan,
It will be nice to meet you and your D. We will just transfer the contents of her folder at check in and she will be all set!

A quick note to all auditioning: we will be beginning with the dance portion of the audition. We recommend that you come dressed to dance so you don't need to go change :-)

I hate to bother you one more time however, I did try to call the telephone number on the paperwork we received from The College of Music and I could not get a live person.

It says we need to meet in the registration area HMU 088 at 8:30. Is this the correct place even though we are switching to the BFA program? Also, I looked on the map, found the HMU building but did not see a 088. Is this the Housewright Building? And, then we will just find the room once we get there? As long as we are heading in the right direction, we are good.

It's no bother - I like to answer questions here because often others have the same question but aren't able to easily reach me via more traditional means.

You do report to room 088 HMU at 8:30 am on the audition day. That is the Housewright Music Building and room 088 is on the very bottom floor. The building is a bit of a maze, but we put signs up to help you find your way.

Some information that will hopefully help: The Music Theatre program is a cooperative program between the School of Theatre and the College of Music. We feel our students get the best of both worlds that way :-) At the audition will be students who have applied under the BM umbrella and students who have applied under the BFA umbrella all in the same room. For the purposes of getting into MT, there is no distinction - we evaluate all the candidates exactly the same. After we make our selections, we sort out who is a BFA and who is a BM. Where the difference comes into play is the curriculum once a student has been admitted to the MT program. The core Music Theatre curriculum is exactly the same for both BMs and BFAs (acting, movement, voice and dance) the difference lies in some of the other classes. For example, BFA students take Directing, while BM students take Conducting.
All the MT majors (regardless of track) take their core classes with other majors in that dept - they are rarely with only MT majors except for MT Workshop. They take acting with the BFA Acting majors, music theory with Music Performance majors, etc.

I can of course, go on forever about this and will if you like :-) but I hope I have answered some of your questions!

I can be reached at (850) 644-7234. That number will ring my wonderful assistant Barbara. If I am not available, she will make sure I get a message.

So, I just want to say how much we loved FSU and the way they conducted their auditions. And, I got to meet Michele and thanks so much. She is just so very knowledgeable. It really was my pleasure.

So, those of you that will be attending the auditions on the 24th, first... good luck and second just go in there and give it your all. I really liked the fact that they base their auditions on 1/3 dance 1/3 acting 1/3 voice. And... for us.... that is perfect because so many of the schools say they are looking for trainable kids who are potential triple threats yet that really isn't what they mean.

Anyway, they try to make everyone feel compfortable right from the beginning and tell you NOT to READ into anything. I liked that as a parent. You really do try to analyze the audition when you leave the room but this time.... we just let it go. We enjoyed the weather and just were happy that we got through it.

Anyway, those of you that have not auditioned yet, just enjoy yourself. Tallahassee is a great town and not one person we met was unkind or ugly. We loved the school, loved the people, and loved the audition.

We will admit 10-12 freshmen for Fall 2007.

Cindy, thank you so much for your kind words - I love what I do and meeting all the candidates and their families is one of the highlights of my year.
I just wish more of our current MT students were around this weekend to answer questions. Most of them were in rehearsal for Sweeney Todd all weekend, so they weren't able to cheer on our candidates. Feb. 24 & 25 is a performance weekend so I expect more will be available during the day.
I believe there are still tickets if any of the auditioners in town 2/23-2/25 would like to get an idea of what our current students are up to!

Michelle, We got back around midnight from my DD's audition for MT yesterday and I have to say that EVERYTHING about the day was perfect... after we got there (late). Everyone was so warm and friendly that it made us all feel very comfortable. On the drive up, I was nervous about Tallahassee being too far away from home, but after this weekend, I could really see my D happy there. I must agree with Cindy, that we also loved the town, the school and most importantly the people. I was sorry that we couldn't stay for the Sweeney rehearsal last night, it would have been a great experience for her but unforntunately work calls this morning. I have a couple of questions and I will try to email you privately. It has been a transition for me go from "lurker" to actual participant.
