I'm LOST. What type of careers should I be looking into? (Econ major)

Hello guys

I'm an economics major and lately I have been thinking about what I want to do after graduation and at this point, I don't really know what type of careers suits me best.

I would like to go into finance field but I don't really know much about it. When I look up finance-related type of jobs, they usually involve accounting. I have taken accounting classes and I didn't enjoy them as much. I know I definitely don't want to go into accounting, but it seems like most finance related jobs require some accounting skills.

I love economics. I love solving problems. I enjoy thinking and coming up with answers/solutions. Would finance analyst suit me? But it also requires some accounting skills. Do you guys know to what extent this type of jobs require accounting skills?

I do not want a boring job and lately I've been really interested in entertainment industry, but I'm not sure what an econ major like myself can do in entertainment business. I, however, got a summer internship at Sony Entertainment Picture. It's basically marketing type of job for video networks, which is completely unrelated to my econ major.
I'm gonna be honest here. I only applied to this internship because someone told me to and also because of the name (Sony). Now that I got the internship, I don't know if it would be helpful to my career since it's not finance-related and it probably will not be a relevant experience for finance....what do you guys think?

Nonetheless, I try to think of this internship as a experiment if I'd enjoy marketing. But I'm a senior (graduating in Fall 2010) and I feel like I don't have any more time to experiment something like this. Do you guys think my summer internship would be a waste of time?

Anyway, from the info above, could you guys recommend any type of jobs/careers/internships that I should be looking into?

Sorry, so many questions here...

There are jobs in non-profits and government for Econ majors where you can use skills in analysis, modeling, and writing.

It seems to be very late in the game for you to be getting your rear in gear, however, in that your track record appears to be very unfocused to this point, which make you a harder “sell” to a prospective employer.

I’m not wild about your internship but something is better than nothing and you are waaaaaaay too late to be applying to the best ones by now…that boat has sailed. Make the best of it, display an incredible work ethic, including arriving early and then staying late when the job requires it, and angle for the most responsible tasks you can get instead of smoldering with resentment that you want to be doing something else.

The tip-off to your problem is your second paragraph: you say you want to go into Finance but don’t know much about it. What makes you want to go into Finance? The number of other people who want to do it? Perceived prestige? Assumptions about a lucrative paycheck?

I see that you’re at UCLA. I would get your tail over to the Career Office and start getting some counseling as of yesterday. [UCLA Career Center](http://career.ucla.edu)
