I'm madly in love: With NYU's Financial Aid! x)

A need-based grant, I think.

I'm so excited I got the $25,000 CAS Scholarship even though I don't have financial need!!! I can't believe it. My parents are amazed, and a little disappointed that I'm probably not going to be going to Berkeley any more :)

momfromme - i thought loans offerred by the school and work-study counts as aid to you, which means nyu not only met the efc, but exceeded it in this case?

I received no financial aid form or anything. Problematic or just plain out of luck?

About 70% of the package was private loans. In the real world, private loans are not aid. To me, it smacks of false advertising for NYU to put out financial aid statements that show that they have covered the full cost when so much of it is in loans.

Given that my daughter was offered other financial aid packages that nailed the EFC without PLUS loans, NYU is most definitely out of the picture.

My D is a senior at NYU and, from what we've seen over the years, NYU never indicates that they will provide full need-based aid. This is obvious if you've read this forum or the NYU admissions board or any of the student-based online NYU communities, or if you've visited NYU and attended an information session and tour. Compared to many other colleges, NYU's endowment is very small and the costs involved with a school of this size operating in Manhattan are enormous. I'm not excusing their decisions re: aid but it's very well-publicized that there will almost always be a gap between what they offer and what the actual costs are. People should know that going in, if they've done their research. Loans are always going to be a part of the financial aid package, just as they are at almost every other college.

Well, the final small envelopes arrived so it's set my D will be going to NYU... And she's thrilled!

I was looking for leverage to up the scholarships / grants from $19K (EFC of $3,400) but we'll make it work.

WOOT ?

mackie45 - i also got the j. eckhouse scholarship. i looked him up and he went to MIT??? but i do know that the scholarships are renewable because i called. but i only got 16,500 free money and the rest were loans. my efc isn't remarkably high its average i guess (9,000) but i'm trying to make it work. i got 5,000 in outside scholarships.

I haven't received any outside scholarships to date. Still waiting though.
