Im not lying i actually have a 2.8 gpa.. please help me

Hi guys.. first day on this college confidential thing.. basically i need to know straight up what my chances of college are... if so, any suggestions? I would prefer a school in a somewhat large college town but now i would take anything better than community college. would like any input i can get. Thanks in advance.

Grade:11th
School: McLean Hs (ranked 55th in the country)
Gpa: 2.8
Sat: 1800
Ethnicity: white

Current classes and grades
AP Calculus AB: F(55%ish)
Spanish 3: F (around 65%)
Physics: A (95%)
Advanced tech drawing: A (99%)
AP Psychology: A (91%)
English 11: A (93%)
Us History: B (88%)

I have a few unimportant extracurricular, but the best one i have is crew. I am a coxswain. I did crew freshman and sophomore year and we did great (3rd place at nationals sophomore year) The main problem with that though is that its a huge time commitment and since i am failing 2 classes i cant keep up with it, so I wont be coxing this year.

Thats basically it. My grades suck. I'm a really hardworking student but some of my classes are really tough for me. I have a tutor in calculus but i'm still failing. And if it matters I was diagnosed with ADD at the end of freshman year and now i'm medicated, but still struggle a bit from that.

Thanks a lot for your input

Well it seems like you have the option of going to a lower tier college (Radford, etc) or you can go to a community college and transfer after a couple years.

First off, if you have the option at all to switch out of AP Calculus AB, you might want to seriously consider doing so. AP classes only look good on your record if you’re doing well in them–if you fail Calc, it’ll just be a credit you missed because you took a class that was too hard!

If you try to do as well this year as you can, as well as next year–and especially if you switch Calc for an easier math, I don’t see why community college should be your sole option. It would probably be best to look into lower-tier colleges, as mike7vick suggested.

Also, if you feel that your ADD diagnosis has made a significant(!) impact on your grades then I would mention it when applying to schools. Be very cautious if you decide to do so, however: any circumstances out of a students’ control affecting their grades really do need to be significant to be worth mentioning to a college, since if they aren’t one risks sounding like they are making an excuse for their performance.

Your test scores will definitely help you, and that you’ve been in tutoring will too, since that shows you haven’t just been slacking off.

Hey!
I’d be helpful to know what schools you are referring to for your “chance”.
Lets look at your grades first. The SAT Score of 1800 is good, and considerably not enough for certains schools. Then again, some schools say they “dont admit by the score”.

Your high school is McLean; since it is apparently ranked “55th in the country” colleges may either cut you some slack, or expect more of you.

Your gpa of 2.8 is not that good, at all. Try improving it, a lot. HOWEVER, colleges will take into consideration the fact that you are taking extremely rigoruous courses, which they will like. On the other hand, they may think you are spreading yourself too thin, which turns them off because they usually want a student who knows his/her limits.

Grades specifiically:
Current classes and grades. You’re grade in Calculus (AP) is not good. You should drop it, if possible and if you deem necessary. You should not drop Spanish, but if you are in a higher level, try to go down, maybe not honors but regular level 3? physics 95, great job!
Advanced Tech Drawing, great job! AP Pyschology, nice!. English 11, outstanding. US history is decent, especiaally if it were AP, but an 88 is perfect. Try improving that, strive to get all As it is possible.

Extra-curriculars. First off, don’t be so negative on yourself, dont belittle your accomplishmnets. All ECs are important. Being in Crew two years shows that you stay to onne thing. Great job 3rd place! Yes indeed, if you feel as though your ECs are taking a toll on your grades, maybe take a break from one or two until you find a pattern you are comfortable with on your grades (meaning until you’re grades are higher and stay that way for a substantial amount of time)

You’re grades don’t suck, they could be better. You’re in all honors, give yourself a break. You are hardworking, that is good, jsut dont “bite off more than you can chew”.

Going back to cal, if you still have a tutor and still you are failing, then maybe it isnt for you. Just think on that.

Finally, DONT MENTION YOUR ADD. DONT! I have ADHD, and there are Soooooooooooo many kids with ADHD who have GPAs of 4.0 etc. Colleges will think that becasue of your ADD you wont be able to function in their school or do well in other words. They wont have sympathy, if anything try to get empathy in which case they know how you feel. My cousin goes to columbia and my mom went to nyu, they know the way addmissions work. Don’t do anything to make you stand out in a negative way. (ADHD is add with hyperactivity. :stuck_out_tongue: its hard for me to focus, especially in the APs or honors courses, but I manage and I get As. You can do it, I believe in you. There is still time!

Good luck and if you ever need any more input, message me!

I hope I wasnt too hard. :/

check out BU, Syracuse, Northeastern, UVM, UConn

basically any schools in that tier you have a decent shot at.

Like everyone else is saying, drop AP AB Calc. It’s hurting your chances more than helping them. Is Spanish 3 Honors? If so, I would try dropping into an on-level Spanish 3. If not, then I’m not really sure what to do there. (I might be wrong) but I think that a lot of colleges like to see al least getting through 3 levels of a language. Most of the people I know who stopped taking Spanish/French did so after level 3. I would try to work a little harder in that class…maybe get an NHS tutor or just stay after school with the teacher. You definitely want to at least get Spanish up to the C range, if not at least a B.

Your SAT is decent, and I think that that if you could work your GPA up to at least a 3.0 you would be able to secure your chances for a decent college. Just make sure to do well in your classes. Assuming this is your junior year, you definitely don’t want to have ANY grade lower than a C. That wouldn’t look thaaat great for many colleges. Good luck :)

as everyone has said, you have to get rid of those F’s

please chance back http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1225356-compsci-schools-students-bad-stats-like-me-uc-chancers-please-look.html</a></p>

Wow you need to fix up that F in Spanish; it kills your GPA so much, and drop AP Calc as soon as possible.

Actually I retract my post up there. You need to get those two failing classes up in order to get into the colleges of your choice.
