so i got rejected from UCLA, and i'm waitlisted for ucsd..
i understand that this is their first time using a waiting list,
i'm just really lost at the moment,
i really thought my stats were decent,
my gpa was 3.9, weighted (from freshman to junior year), my sat score was 1990,
Critical Reading: 690, Math: 630, Writing: 670..
but it shouldn't be all about my test scores and gpa, im a well rounded student, im involved, did my fair share of community service, been in a sport for four years, and stuck with choir for four years as well, i'm dedicated and hardworking...
i'm not trying to complain, i did get accepted to UCI, and im very thankful for that,
i'm just wondering what i did wrong..it hurts to know you tried so hard..

and also, i know UCSD does admissions based on a point system, i was wondering, if i call the admissions office would they tell me how many points i had and how many i needed in order to be admitted?
and also, if your waitlisted, can you still appeal? is it worth it?
thank you so much, answers are greatly appreciated,

love, lost highschool senior..

same thing happend to me. i believe there are 1200 ppl on waitinglist.

yeah, ucs only started waitlisting this year, a possible ramification of the budget crisis. so honestly, i think that its really hard for anyone to really give you a perspective into how hard it might be. noone knows anyways

I got accepted into UCSD. My GPA was 3.3, I took 8 AP classes through highschool. SAT I was 1970, took 3 SAT II. Math- 790, Chinese- 780, Biology- 730. As far as I can tell your grades aren’t too far from mine. I called UCSD to ask why I got accepted and why my friends didn’t, they said my friends did not have enough LEADERSHIP.
Your grades and SAT is good enough to get into ucsd, i think the only factor that they’re still considering is your leadership.

all uc’s are on a point-based system, with the majority of points allocated towards GPA and SAT’s. ive heard that the total possible is around 12,000 points, and that you can get around 7000 points for perfect sat I’s and II’s and 4.0uw gpa. in most years, this will get you into ucsd without an essay (though probably not this year, with budget cutbacks).

well, i guess i was lacking in leadership in clubs and stuff,
but i was team captain of my varsity tennis team…i guess thats not enough?
cuz i also know someone who got 1860 on sat and a 4.1 gpa and no sports…no leadership… same service hours as me,
i just really wonder how their point system really works…

i called them today, and they said you needed like 7744 points to be admitted and i had 7738… :/

oh and congrats 4646asdfasdf!
wait one thing, ur gpa was 3.3?

thanks. yes 3.3 unweighted. Weighted is around…3.8 i think? Our school doesn’t tell us the weighted totals on our report card.

@4646asdfasdf: You can call and ask why you’ve been rejected/accepted? I kind of want to call UCSD to ask why I got rejected, and call UCLA about why I got in.

Wow, 6 points away from being accepted?! I think you have a high chance of getting in since you must be very high up on the waiting list, but you might not be as high as I am thinking. Just thinking right off the bat, I know there’s at least 15 people in my school that got into UCSD and won’t be attending. I, myself, will only attend if I get into the SOM program, which I really doubt. Of those that got accepted at my school (quite a number I imagine), only 3 are 100% sure that they will be attending UCSD, so keep your fingers crossed that more kids decide to go to other schools and I’m positive you’ll be getting a phone call asking if you’re interested in attending! :)

Oh, and in regards to be rejected from UCLA, don’t even sweat about it. Our school’s “valedictorian” (the REAL rank 1 is disqualified due to some lame occurrence in AP Chem when we were sophomores, but he was accepted into Stanford + all UCs so far!) got rejected. Personally, I think you’re way more qualified than she is (you have a higher SAT score and have way better ECs, which just shows how she had nothing other than a high GPA). Just wait it out and hope for the best!!

@cantsaywho, thanks you made me feel better, haha

&&@konakup, congrats on getting into ucla you shouldnt even bother asking why, haha, but that is pretty weird…

Averages for UCSD:
GPA: 4.08
SAT1
Reading:637
Writing:650
Math:677

If you were that close to getting in you’re probably pretty high on the waiting list.

I called and asked why UCSD rejected me. They said I only had like 75XX or something points when I called.

Apparently you times your GPA by 1000, then take .8 of your SAT score then add it. Then they’ll weigh in ECs, leadership, and personal accomplishments. I may have lacked ECs/personal accomplishments.

ohh, is is only ucsd who uses this formula?

Your stats look great! I feel like your grades/ test scores placed you at the top of the waiting list. I would think you would get in, especially if you have decent EC’s on top of those grades! : ) Good luck!

@hopenbelieve111 thankks :]
goodluck to you too with ucsb! let me know what happens!

I’m not sure if ucsd is the only one, but I would guess not.
