I'm really turned off by the idea of eating clubs...

yea... hobbes is a special case... can't find an eskimo like him anywhere here.

lol welcome to the west prefontaine =P

No, you missed the point mea. They aren't all elitist, implying that they are somewhat elitist. hobess merely confirmed that

sigh, i guess we have found the first anti-social, YES ANTI SOCIAL PRICK, on CC. dude, we're not even arguing about clubs anymore. you're talking about the student in general, calling us all nothing more than alcoholics, and in that way you are debasing me and the rest of the CC community. if you don't like alcohol or even kids who drink it, keep it to yourself. a wise man once told me, "if you don't like 'em, shut your mouth and stay the hell away."

oh and happy birthday. i hope you have a great year at Princeton

"Playfair- I read that. I didn't see in it a response at all. I'll show you line by line: "

Mea,

your post seemed hardly related to mine.

Here is my attitude:

a) clubs may be perceived as a distinctive feature of P, which may attract some P types and turn off some H or Y types. So be it. the university has no means of marshaling these private institutions.

b) "elitist" in an etymological sense (French: elir = to select) means "selective". But even the "selective" eating clubs are less selective than anything else in this institution (try making it into a varsity sport or an a capella group or whatever, same holds for H,Y). So the "elitism" cannot be the issue - relatively speaking - for people who don't mind queuing up for one out of 10 or one out of 20 spots otherwise. This myth about "elitsm of the clubs" should not deter prospective students from forming their own impression during visits.

c) some people violently oppose the idea that there may be private places outside campus that they may not be admitted to eat at on a regular basis, while other fellow students, or even friends may. these are typically people who will not be happy at P, and I would recommend they look at other places instead of *****ing about the way P looks like and works.

Regards :)

i think hobbes more meant that they arent really elitist, not that not all of the clubs are elitist and some are

What i gathered from hobbes is as follows, that they arent quite as extreme as i portray but indeed they are at the very least nominally elitist.

Final conclusion we have reached is as follows.

If you are into drinking and being cool =Princeton
If you are quiet and reserved and like to unearth mysteries=Harvard

as much as i am enjoying internet beef (prefontaine, do u know what that means? beef?) an admin needs to close this thread

Does the truth hurt too much hobbes?

why didnt u go to harvard if u despise princeton so? or was princeton ur second school lol.

wat truth?

Hehe, ok, then I will reiterate.

30% are bicker. The majority of them are open to all - by definition, not elitist.
There are subsidies so that they are accessible to all those with economic difficulties - by definition, not elitist.
They are an option. Anyone who chooses to can join. By definition not elitist.
Many do join.
Stop considering them beerhouses. They provide all sorts of facilities and events, and of course food.
And it's worth saying that as a whole, with its finaid policy, Princeton is very much not an elitist institution. The network of the university is dedicated to make sure every student gets as much attention resources and guidance as possible.

"Does the truth hurt too much?"

I would ask the same of you.

haha, shrek my academic stats far surpass your measly 1490 and other mediocre achievements. I realize you went to the coke semi's and all, but please don't scoff. No, Pton was my first choice initially (ED) but now I am having second thoughts. I come from a rural town and made no college visits prior to ED, so my knowledge was limited at best

sigh, follow your own advice. and dont come to princeton. seriously, defer one year, and go to harvard. im sure you'll fit in perfectly with the rest of those bombastic pricks.

and no there is no "truth." i see you're the type who always has to say the last word. so in taht case, i hope you grow up some more this year. aight? ciao!

You just compared Princeton's social culture to Harvard's academic one. I would wager that Princeton's academic culture is as laudable as Harvard's , and in terms of their UG education, probably more so.

lol i didnt get a 1490 and howd u know i was at coke? lol. interesting

and u know i care so much about sat scores and i love personally attacking others lol.

i hope u realize all ur rumored beliefs about princeton are false when u arrive on campus and you chill out. if not and you cant handle the laid back princeton atmosphere, harvard is only a few hours away.

Prefontaine - are you serious? You're falling back on SAT scores? Incredible. Bring it on, but in a PM please. This thread is done.

Yes, mea the truth is painful. The truth that I will be ensconsed in an ambiance of chilvarous males courting females amidst a fiendish fervor of supporting illegal activities. Yes, that is painful.

as a moderator wrote in closing a harvard thread earlier this morning, "This thread is getting to be about the posters instead of the colleges. Time to move on."
