I can't shake this feeling of fear whenever I think about college. As soon as someone mentions it, my heart rate goes up, my breaths grow shorter, my body becomes anxious and tense. I'm going very far away... I'm from southern North Carolina and I'm going to Rhode Island School of Design. I think it would be easier if some of my friends were going to northern schools, but nearly all of my friends are staying in-state to go to UNC Chapel Hill, Duke, Davidson, Elon, etc. I'm just so worried, so much more than everyone else seems to be. I'm tense now, just writing this. I don't know what I'm scared of... I am confident in my academic and artistic skills, and I have a good social life. Anyone else feeling scared about going off to school? Is this feeling out of the ordinary? Any advice?

Scared? Nope, I cant wait. And u think going from NC to RI is "very far away"? Try going to college all the way across country, which Im goin to do.

Man. If just mentioning college causes you to have a mini heart attack, you must be a wretch posting on CC.

"I am confident in my academic and artistic skills, and I have a good social life."

You will do just fine. Just remember, much stupider people have been in your shoes and graduated.

it is extremely common to feel like you do. i'd bet that most of your friends are nervous too, but wouldnt admit it. your first couple of weeks will be so busy, you wont really get the chance to feel nervous. after you are all settled in, you will hopefully feel like it is your new home. if these feelings still persist or worsen, then it would be a good idea to talk to a counselor at school.
its ok to be nervous- its a huge life change, and i'd be worried if you werent nervous at all!

Yes, it is common. You'll go through phases as the summer progresses. Sometimes you'll be excited to go, other times nervous, and sometimes downright scared ****less.

Despite all this, you can avoid feeling homesick when you get there. Make yourself busy, and you'll forget about home. But you have to be doing things that take your mind off of home.

Try going to college half way across the globe. lol.

im not scared about college.. but those damn loans are really freaking me out

I think everyone is feeling a bit anxious/nervous about the entire ordeal. I know I am! I guess it is just such an extreme change from high school. I'm quite surprised at myself, because I have been looking forward to going to Wake ever since I visited the campus for the first time. However, as I realize I have a little over 2 months left at home, my prespsective has changed vastly. I just really don't want to go anymore, but in the end I know I'll be fine.

relax! i was extremely, extremely nervous... and i ended up HATING my school (i'm transferring)... and despite all my problems with hating the school and being miserable and upset, i still survived :) and so did many others i knew in simillar situations. and i doubt you will hate RISD, i'm sure you'll love it! it must be nerve-wracking going far away, but i'm sure that you will acclimate rather quickly. plus, everyone is away from their homes and their comfort zones - some are closer to home than others, but it doesn't change the fact that everyone IS away from home.

relax, it will all be fine! and in the meantime... enjoy your summer!!!

Find a weak kid the first day there and kick his ass. That'll send your confidence through the roof.

What's to be scared about? You have your whole future ahead of you in college. There's no sense in being scared of your future because only you can control it. Lighten up.

feelings artist

hey my frd is going to RISD too but she's from Hong Kong, which is what you call "very far away". anyway, she's v. excited abt it

It's all gonna be ok. I'm not going to be one of those people who's gonna say "oh I went from here to here and that's sooo much farther away." Hell, going to a school an hour away can still feel like far away.

I was scared through my first year too. I completely left all of my Northern friends when I moved South, and it was scary and I'm sure it would've been easier to just stay put in the North but I'm glad that I didn't. Yes, I did transfer out after 1 semester to another college, but I still am glad I came here.

Everything will be okay, and if worse comes to worse and it's too much stress for you to be away, then you can always transfer home. Being far away from family/friends is not for everybody. Some of us need to be close to our families/friends. Just make yourself as open to new people and experiences as possible, and you'll be okay :)

Best of luck! :)

Hey--I went from NJ to Chapel Hill in the days before the interstate was completed. Now that was far away. First semester will be tough, but then you'll find your friends and your niche.

I'm so nervous too. I'm international and really scared about my language&communication skill&culture&....endless list
My friend said that her first semester was hell then you'll move to earth and heaven eventually(I kinda doubt the heaven part, though)
but you'll be fine at the end

I'm nervous as well. I already miss high school, there were so many cool people I've met these last 4 years of my life and I'm just afraid I'll never see them again. As soon as I get situated into college hopefully I'll make friends as easy as I did in high school

hey dont be scared its perfectly ok to be nervous, trust me everyone is! you'll love college tho, in my experience it is much better then hs.

nevermind....

I thought i'd be more nervous but I'm not. I'll probably get nervous and it'll sink on a few weeks before i leave for college. No point in thinkin about it right now. Jus relax, we're out of high school, we got no summer homework, jus relax, have fun, and worry come august lol.
