I just brought my dog to the vet. I told one of the Assistants I was applying to Cornell for Animal Sci. With that she replied: "Oh, well I hope you have some experience because they'll reject you unless you have seriously worked at a Vets office"

I am freaking out. I really wish I took a job with an equine Vet I was offered last year but I had no time. ugh. My test scores and GPA are all there and I have "impressive" ECs and leadersip but ehhh. I have been riding for 9 years and have a job with a local stable and take care of the horses but I am scared they don't think won't think its enough. Was she being blunt or do I really have no chance. :-(

I need December 11th to be now. Now. I just really want to go to Cornell

i think shes being blunt. they wont just straight out reject you. you have good credentials, good ECs and you have 9 yrs experience riding and working at a stable. dont worry, you're good :)

you should not believe what other high school kids on this site tell you about admissions, and you shouldn't believe a receptionist at your vets'

You aren't applying to vet school - yet. You do have animal experience with your job at the stables. Try to relax - and in the meanwhile

APPLY to another college - now - so that you have another application under your belt. Then - if you do get into Cornell you can send a nice note to the other college withdrawing your applicatin. And the applciation will keep you busy so you have less time to fret.

I'm freaking out too, vitae, because of Cornell's budget cuts and the fact that they're accepting less in-staters this year...
I think the fact that you're applying to the Animal Science major actually helps you, not a ton of applicants apply to that.
Good luck to you, I hope we both get in!

And I agree, December 11th needs to be NOW, because I can't wait any more!

1) She probably thought you meant the VET school, not the undergrad college, and
2) She's an assistant who probably knows nothing about Cornell.

Don't worry about it.

And as a fellow in-stater, thank you so much for that reassuring response, Chandler. :/

Sorry man, I hope we all get in as much as you do, but I want to be realistic and not bank on acceptance.

And I seriously think you're fine, vitae, because of the reasons karajanhra stated above and because working at a vet's office is just one EC that shows an interest in Animal Science: working at a stable is just as good.

thanks guys so much, I am not freaking out (as much now heh)

mem- I applied to Tulane and Northeastern already. I won't find out about NE until wayy after Cornell, BUT I got accepted to Tulane a few days ago :) I feel so much better I got in, well, somewhere. Even though Tulane was my safety haha. The little bit of hope in me is telling me to hold back on sending out my RDS because if I send them, and get into Cornell, then I'd have wasted the mad bank$$ I spent on app fees. I am not even sure where else I am applying actually! Ugh

chandler: Its hard not to assume they will be accepting less of us this year, but we're doing just that - assuming (unless you have read something I haven't... I could very well be wrong) From what I read, CU is planning on cutting back on constructing and freezing hiring - not accepting less in-state. Afterall, it is still state funded. I have read that Bing,Stony Brook, Geneseo have seen a huge increase in applicants but I haven't read anything about the charter schools at Cornell.

Anyone else find it... uh, weird they pushed it up to Dec 11? I mean just last year they had a big delay. Lets hope they decided to accept us all, so they are telling us sooner (hehe)

I actually haven't physically applied anywhere else yet, but I'm working on finishing apps for nine other schools. I think I only have 2 more to physically do the essays for, and then I have to revise...
Congrats on the Tulane acceptance, vitae! That's a good safety.

Yeah, I know, but I'm trying not to be optimistic and keep my hopes up.
I hope we all get accepted AND get told sooner!

Cutting back on constructing/feezing hiring? That's great. How awesome of Cornell not to cut back on instaters. I mean, the contract colleges were originally all about New Yorkers, weren't they? I heard it used to be like 90% in-state in some Contract colleges. It would suck if all the out of staters come gallavanting in from Idaho and wherever they're from, pockets filled with gold.

OP, I wouldn't take the Assistant seriously. She probably didn't realize you were an undergrad, plus you already work at the stables. Unless she works in Cornell admissions, I wouldn't listen.

Vitae - good for you! you are the first EDer on these boards I've heard of who applied elsewhere right away - my son got into Cornell ED in Dec 02 - I had made him apply to his safety as soon as he was done with the Cornell ED app - afterward he thanked me because he said if he hadn't gotten in the acceptance he got the next day from his safety would have been very helpful.

Good luck!!

thank you everyone :)

Yeah, I've applied to a bunch of other schools already too, and gotten into 2 places already. It seemed like a good idea to apply to most of my places so if I don't get into Cornell, I won't be scrambling to finish things up in December.

where else did you get into bestwhit?
Tulane is my second choice, so I am pretty stoked. If worst case scenero happens (I get deferred or rejected from Cornell) I am still going to be scrambling in December to apply to some more schools (around the holidays AND my birthday... please Cornell don't be that cruel.) But I'm hoping that will be avoided.

Same here vitae, I still haven't done any homework/college stuff over break... and there's only one day left of it!
I'm going to be writing 5 essays at the same time on December 12th if Cornell defers/rejects me.

12 days!

my advice is write your essays now! My friend applied ED to a college last yr she was counting on...got rejected, was really depressed about it, had trouble writing all her other essays last minute

I have to start my cornell essays soon too...but even if i'm rejected, I will still graduate with an NYU degree no matter what, so I feel safe

Well I've written them all except Penn and Brandeis, so I'm not in a horrible position. The 4 Tufts essays took me a while... but I think I'll use my Williams essay for Harvard and Yale, since I liked it and it was basically the answer to a "who are you?" prompt (just tweaked a little for the Williams requirement)

And I have so much homework....

Me too =( It's so difficult setting up priorities for both college and school. It makes it even worse that I don't actually WANT to apply to any other college, only Cornell =*(

I've gotten into Tulane also and Wisconsin (Madison), both places I would be pretty freaking happy attending.
But yeah, finishing but not sending the rest of our RD apps seems like a good idea.
