Hey guys! I'm southern calfornian (asian american), and i'm thinking of applying to Rice.

Do you guys know what Rice's environment is like? like, the weather, the people, is it deep south stereotype, etc...

i want to make sure i can fit in. thanks!

It's certainly not a deep-south atmosphere. The weather is warm and humid, and the people are pretty diverse. There are numerous Californians here at Rice, so I really doubt you'd have any trouble fitting in. Do you have any more specific questions?

thanks for helping me out! i have a few more questions :).
is there grade inflation or deflation at rice?
would you say the people there are competitive like east coasters or laid back like the people at stanford?
is rice in an urbanized area or is it separated from Houston?

thanks again!

My daughter is a sophmore from California and chose Rice over Berkeley, UCLA, Pomona, etc. She is very happy at Rice. The campus is beautiful and close to the Museum district and next door to the Medical centers, but removed from the downtown, easily accessible by a light rail system one block from campus. Atmosphere is much better than Stanford (she did not apply as it was too close to home and too geared towrd grad students)...2900 students randomly palced in residential colleges within the university. There is definitely not grade inflation in the classes she has taken thus far.
