I'm in a Kaplan prep course and on the first day (Monday) we took a practice test to track our progress and I got an 1860 :/ Math 680, Writing 560, Critical Reading 610. This is a lot lower than my PSAT score sophomore year, which was a 208(Math 67, Writing 66, CR 75) and in fact my CR score is actually LOWER than my score when I took the SAT back in 7th grade, which was a 660! The only part that makes sense here is my math score. I'm really confused because normally I find CR problems really easy, so this was kind of a shocker. Then again, I didn't study for this or the PSAT, so it might've been random.... Was my really low score just the result of a bad day, or is this actually an accurate prediction of my ability? And if it was accurate, then do you think it's possible that I could bring my score up to about 2300-2400 by the December 1 test date?

bumpppp

guys answer, please :/

Your PSAT is a better indicator than a Kaplan test.

Thanks! So do you think it’s possible that I could get a 2300+ by December?

No one can answer that question, ramenaddict (by the way, cool name).

But prep classes and books in general will often make the diagnostic test harder and the later tests easier in order to create the illusion of score increase. Your PSAT is a better indicator.

Why trust the accuracy of a test written by a company other than the College Board?

When you take a real SAT test, the College Board has already gauged the difficulty level of each question that counts by previously testing tens of thousands of students using the experimental section. Kaplan may be a large company but has nowhere near the resources of the College Board.

Kaplan is motivated to give you a more difficult test than the actual SAT in order to show that you have “improved” dramatically after taking the prep course. In addition, the Kaplan test may not accurately reflect the type/frequency/difficulty of certain questions on the real SAT.

@cheerios: haha thanks :)

and yeah…I’ve heard that outside prep companies make their test harder to make it seem like you improved more, I feel a bit better now!
