I asked around this week n found out the professor i am taking one of my history classes with isnt very good. I also decided to look him up on rate my professor again..and found out the first time i read reviews on the wrong teacher

After reading reviews in very scared i wont pass his class.. review after review nothing but negative reviews. Very detailed too

Now i am worried i wont pass and he is the only teacher for this class.. n i wrote i was taking this class on my TAU.

Should i try? Or just take anothrr history course n contact every UC? I dont need this specific course it was just on of my options

Don’t be intimidated by those scathing reviews. I say just remain in the class and try your hardest. Read the textbook, don’t rely only on lecture, ask questions, and even get to know your professor during office hours.

Just have confidence in yourself and you’ll pass.

Well, IMO, people are more inclined to review on RMP when they have a bad experience. Doesn’t mean the teacher is necessarily awful. How’s the syllabus look?

What I noticed is that people from community colleges tend to exaggerate somewhat the difficulty and harshness of a professor and his class on RateMyProfessors. They’re usually a little better than the reviews suggest, but that’s just been in my personal experience.

You can always try and find another course to take. If that fails, look up the grade distribution reports that your school releases every semester to get an idea of how hard his class actually is. If worse comes to worse, just take the class and endeavor to pass it no matter what.

As long as you get a “C” in the class or better, the UCs will probably not rescind your offer of admission if they accept you.

Follow @ocnative’s advice. I think you’ll pass it. It might not be fun, but it’s certainly doable.

@Ocnative your right im just going meet regularly with him during office hours that always helps

@Matt4200 im a history major and have taken history teachers whe taught at UC level. .they also taught at UCLA for example. But these reviews werent about work being hard.
They were some that said he bragged about having the record for most drops in school.
I dont enjoy taking classes with professors who dony care about students. Its just a bad vibe and intimmdates me i guess

@sonic23 - If your professor is unfair in any way and you feel you deserved a better grade because you actually worked hard you can challenge any grade received for up to 5 years.

Trust me if you do the work you’ll get the grade. Don’t let reviews intimidate you.

The professor ended up being everything reviews said, he didn’t even put “A” on the grade scale, it was separate. Truly though he just makes me feel uncomfortable he’s unnecessarily mean. He nearly made a girl cry during class for using her cell phone, and made another student drop the class for taking a phone call outside during class. He curses like crazy, and is just very intense, I am just not used to such a mean person being a professor. Someone walked in late…(its the first day and parking sucks) he stopped his TA from handing him the syllabus by saying “■■■■ him” he was late than when up to him and threatened to kick him out next time and said several other things.

Point blank this guy stressed me out, I can handle a hard grader…but this guy is something else. That and with work, and my spouses health problems I don’t know how I am going to handle the stress.

sorry if i sound like i am complaining I am just really worried about this class now.

If he really is a cruel person, you might want to document the problems and report him. I can’t really make the judgement though, since I wasn’t there. Good luck.

@Sega18 i really thought about it and want to report him. Hes too mean. Ive had strict professors for winter one would take off 25% from teset if he caught you on.your phone. But never have i scene a professoa. Pretty much bully a student.

@Cayton im afraid its too late to add another history class. I could add another random GE class but thats all

@cayton well the tricky part is that he doesn’t exactly go by the book, he says he knows history better, so for exams I need to ignore what I’ve been taught in the past and just listen to him. If i can do that and try my hardest I am sure I will “pass with a C”. Im just not sure if I want to barley get by, or just drop the course and contact all of the UCs. I have about a week to decide though.

You probably shouldn’t drop the class. Sure, getting a “C” in your last semester doesn’t sound like it would look good to the UCs, especially UCLA and UC Berkeley, but I hope it comforts you to know that offers of admission by those two UCs and the UCs in general are rarely rescinded because applicants got a “C” in one of their classes.
