I'm taking the Jan 7 SSAT. Help.

whoa. someone`s already on par with high school.

I am, my hs tutor helped me...

Oh, and thank you, kchen.

I tried most of a SSAT practice test. I am officially going to fail the verbal section because of my terrible vocabulary. APPARENTLY. :(

Get an SAT vocab book and study like CRAZY!!! Worked for me on the SAT.:) How long is your winter break?

I have 11 days left before the test. [!!!] I go back to school on Jan. 3rd, but I'm still working on applications during this time. How much time should I invest a day on this vocabulary? And how did you study the words (5 at a time, said them out loud 47382 times, hmm)?

Thanks so much!

Actually, I use a mnemonic device for better memorization, though rote memorization sometimes does work

Did you already have illustrations with the words, or did you draw them yourself as you went?

Not illustrations, just a funny connection with something, in my mind.

Again, the percentile you want to score depends on how selective the school you are applying is.

I see. I'll try that, but I'm not sure my memory is that good.

Edit: My schools are pretty selective, so I'm hoping to score as well as I can. Though I'm not sure how well I can do...

Remember that the SSAT is only one of the factors considered for admission. Mostly, it depends on your personality, if you are motivated, etc, so don't fret too much about it. I know a girl who got admitted into Exeter with 79th percentiles, so... just a thought.

I'll keep that in mind. If you don't mind me asking, what kinds of grades girl have?

(I think straight As, not sure though; may need to ask her again). I know that she did a lot of community service and was a legacy so....

Didn't expect a response. You're welcome.

i took my ssat in november.

as for vocab, i got 87 or something lyk that (not national, the real one)
just memorize. :)

I have the 2005 Princeton Review SSAT/ISEE prep book. Should I study the vocab list in there, or should I study the Gruber SAT vocab list?

Also, is the Kaplan SSAT and ISEE book any good (in general, not just vocab)?

Thanks.

Take a practice SAT, as those are modeled after them. The Kap book has a few numbering and sectional mistakes, I don't know abou the PR one though. The Gruber list may be too long, so use the PR list...

KAPLAN BOOKS SUCK. DON'T BUY IT.

use the princeton reviews one. don't do the whole thing tho, cuz it's a waste of time. spend most of your time memorizing vocab and just look through the books for hints.

How many mistakes do you have when you took the practice test, anyone?
