I'm too ashamed to show my Mom my SAT scores.

Critical Reading 510
Math 470
Writing 570

Ouch...but dude "it only hurts for a minute." Soften her up somehow and slowly tell her...you're gonna have to do it sooner or later.

I'm sure i had scores like that too. I don't even know if i should check my scores on college board or not...i probably did pretty poorly

Hug* It'll be okay. Try and find a bright side- it's hidden in there if you look hard enough. I'm still looking for mine, too. Was this your first SAT?

Yea my first SAT.

I just got my review books yesterday. So tomorrow I begin studying

sure she'll be shocked. but both you and her will get over it. just study really hard when you retake it. Do you think you got low scores because of time constraints? or did you not know the material well enough? Also remind you mom that most colleges will only take into account your highest scores for each section so improvement is a good thing to see. good luck!

i wasnt prepared at all.

I guessed on a lot of math and CR was tough. I need to improve.

It's okay, just study a lot during the summer and you'll be fine.

That's good that it's only your first. Like SparklingJuice said, study this summer and you'll be fine. :)

I'm going to do the same exact thing, our scores are pretty similar, except you have my beat in CR, math, and writing. My scores are on the Official thread if you'd like to see them.

It's alright, man. Just tell your mom that life doesn't revolve around the SATs and it's understandable for her to be a little dissapointed. Explain to her that with enough prep, you'll be fine.

Not a big deal.

omg SAT really scares me. :|

thats a 1550, which puts you in the what- top 50 percentile? It's okay for your first try- but with a bit more practice you can do better, okay actually ALOT more practice.
explain that to your mom... hopefully it wud b arite...

^ lol you still have like 2 weeks before they actually mail it to you (assuming that your mom doesn't know that collegeboard posted the scores up today)...as a last resort, you could always "steal" the scores they mail you and your mom would NEVER EVER find out muwahahaha...

I got a 140ish on my PSAT in sophomore year... scoring above 2100ish on Practice tests (got above 2000 on my first SAT attempt although I was out of it that day

Dude don't worry I was in your boat, actually worse with some scores.

Soph. PSAT
49 CR
71 M
49 W

I know really bad scores

Junior PSAT
59 CR
71 M
67 W

March 2008 SAT
700 CR
770 M
630 W

June 2008 SAT
670 CR
790 M
780 W

Its all a matter of practice and time. I did so many practice tests in cr and writing. I never really did math, but I'm pretty sure with a year of math in school your scores will improve. Just do practice tests. Get Rocket Review for writing and math. The grammar tips are amazing and its the reason why i went from 630->780. The essay part is really good. I followed its advice went from 6 essay score to 12. Its all a matter of how much work you want to put in. Also I recommend grammatix for CR. The best practice tests are past PSAT and QAS so join the CC Sat prep group on google groups. I think you can improve. Just keep working.

^ holy **** man...from a 1690-2240 gj. whats the secret for cr?

I never studied vocab. I only learned roots. I thought it would be more effective. It really helped with most SC. As for reading passages, I mostly practiced. The answer is right in front of you so your job is to chose the right one (Grammatix). I picked up a little trick when browsing CC i think from Xiggi's sat prep advice. Look at the line numbers in questions then bracket the lines that it says. Read the passage and when you reach the end of a bracket go answer the question. It really helped, because a lot of the time in CR they throw a different viewpoint out in the next paragraph to confuse you. The bracket technique really works. Writing is just grammar rules, so RR is the best. I didn't really know a lot of them, so once I learned the common SAT pitfalls it was fairly easy to raise my score. Essay is easily prepped. Make sure you have a good intro with a strong thesis that clearly disagrees or agrees. No wishy washy thesis but very clear. Have one historical example ie. New Deal or WWII and one literary example ie. Brave New World, Huck Finn, Anthem, etc. and know those examples in and out. (Use wikipedia and make sure you know a lot of facts, its always easier to tell the truth than make up stats :-)) Then make sure you stay on topic and develop each example. USE THE ENTIRE SPACE PROVIDED. I used only the first page in march and got a 6 on the essay. I used both pages and got a 12. Also make sure you know a few SAT words ie. epitomize, elucidate, arduous, that you can readily use with your examples and in our intro to make it sound professional. Have a solid conclusion that restates and connects. Math, I know I started high, but I would always make 3-4 dumb mistakes. I learned a few tricks like make sure you spend 1 min on every math problem no matter what. Read the problem, solve the problem, then reread the question to make sure you are answering the right thing ( saved me on like 3 questions on the june exam). If you have any more questions I would be happy to help. Sharing advice is what CC is all about, without it I doubt I could have improved to 2240.

Sounds like you were a little confident.

"I think i got like 700+ on writing

math and cr idk"

"Wow. The writing section isnt that hard.

I took the practice test online at College board and found the writing to be extremely easy. ***? I mean, they had sentences with grammar errors a 1st grader would not make."

I am sorry that you did bad. I have taken it three times now. The first two were horrible. However I studied and my score went up 240 points. Now if I can just go up about 150 more.......
