Immature College Essay

I am currently working on an essay for Johns Hopkins. The prompt is along the lines, "tell us something about you that we can not find anywhere else in your application."

I am thinking about writing how my family calls me the "kid whisper" and connecting that to my desire to understand and connect with people. I wan to make a reference to an old show called Rugrats, and compare myself to one of the charters in the show.

The problem is that some people (namely my mom) thinks that it 1. sounds a bit pedophileish and 2. it makes me look really immature.

So what do you guys think about this idea? Honest opinions please.

I think it’s actually a very endearing topic. It projects you as an actual person that has funny nicknames and relatable character. Just make sure your rugrats comparison is insightful and mature, for balance. Id be interested in reading your essay and giving critique if you’d like!

As long as it is written well (as with any topic), this sounds like it would be great. Write about what you want to write about. This is your personal statement, not your mom’s.

I’ve seen essays that compare hair and shoes to the applicant’s personality. So as long as it’s written well, I don’t see the harm in doing so.
