Hi,

I was wondering what impact, and much weight, getting research published in a journal like Nature or Nature Medicine would have on an application to the ivy league.

Thanks!

Absolutely huge. Published research to a college is like an internship/job experience to an employer.

I know it depends somewhat on whether it’s a “good” journal or not, but I couldn’t tell you what’s a good journal.

whoa if you get published in nature then i think you’re in like anywhere

but as if that’s not completely difficult… maybe if you contributed to a professor’s or grad student’s research, so your name gets mentioned somewhere. but i’ve never heard of any high schooler getting published as a first or second author for a paper in NATURE (or science, etc.)

but maybe you’re really smart… idk but even top researchers can’t get published in nature

on the other hand, if you get published in a less prestigious journal, as long as it’s peer reviewed, then that’s still a high accomplishment. i would say a 10/10 on a scale of award potentional

I have actually been acknowledged on a Nature paper (not an author, just acknowledged). I’m really happy about this! It was the combination of 3 summers and 650 hours and I finally earned this. Now I’m preparing for my college admissions, and the professor told me that my acknowledgement alone, would be a huge bonus for colleges!

So yea, thought I would just contribute my own bit of information.

What about 9th out of 25 authors on a nature med paper?

bump10char

i would still say that’s a 10/10. just make sure the colleges know your contributions (assuming they were significant). plus the professor can write you a recommendation.

i asked the professor i worked with to write me a recommendation, and omg it was great! (lol but i had a completely different personality when i was at the lab)
