Before you tell me to go to the UCSD site and check it out for myself, I already did. But I'm still not completely sure if Computer Science is considered an impacted major. Just to clarify, is it?

Also, what factors are considered for certain majors? Do colleges pick you if you're a "minority" (ex: gender)? Like, would colleges be more likely to accept you if you were a female majoring in CS? I'm sorry I worded this question a little weird, but I hope you know what I mean.

Last question: is there a "UC Calculator" that can show me my chances of getting accepted? There are a couple I've tried just by looking it up on Google, but I'm just wondering if any one else can offer me a different site.

Thank you for your time and knowledge!! I truly appreciate it. Colleges are stressin' me out.

Computer Science is not an impacted major. And impacted majors do not affect your chances of admission to UCSD, and I don’t know what all the criteria are for impacted majors either.

I’ve heard that UCSD is changing their admissions system to a more holistic process this year :\ I don’t know if the current sites that exist are accurate for this year’s admissions process.

As far as I know about impacted majors (once you’re in the school), they’re dependent mostly on your academic standing. If you’re already in college, it’s overall GPA; if you’re applying, I’d venture a guess and say a combination of GPA/SATs. I can see “minority” statuses as being given an extra boost (like they did in admissions for colleges in general) but would hardly think it’s a deciding factor. For example, my cousin would qualify as a minority in bioengineering as a woman, but she didn’t get into that first choice major (and she had a 4.0UW/4.3 W…yikes).

This is what I found on the UCSD CSE site regarding restriction on majors:

"The CSE Department is an open major and accepts all students.

Effective Fall 2008, the CSE Department removed all admission restrictions. The CSE Department is an open major. Call us 858/534-3621 or 858/822-1535 for any questions. You can also send us email at ugradinfo@cs.ucsd.edu."

I would poke around that site and/or send a question to that email listed. One thing that did throw me for a loop is when I googled UCSD’s major list, CS has an asterisk next to it which is used to indicate majors with screening requirements. o__o That’s something to ask about. Hope this helps! The major list is [Undergraduate Majors at UC San Diego](Undergraduate Majors at UC San Diego) <– go here next time for department websites they usually have the most info on getting admitted into impacted majors

also when i was going through my app process many CCers told me that UCSD first looks if you fit into their college and then they put you into the major you want or as undeclared [undeclared if it’s an impacted major and you dont fit their impacted majors qualifications]

I would assume that they look for all the basic for each student in terms of everything, like good EC’s, etc average GPA, avg SAT ,etc.
and then they would run over and see if you did any “amazing” stuff like above avg. GPA, SAT, etc. and then they would select your college and give you your major or put you as undeclared if they think you don’t fit the major description.

its a long complicated, yet boring process so make sure you make your app and essays worthwhile to read :P
