Though it does not affect gpa, what are the impacts of a class where we receive a "not-pass"? (for a 4 unit class where it is not a requirement for anything.)

you get no units and it doesn't affect your GPA. Numbers-wise, it's as if you never took the class at all, except the NP will show up on your transcript.

some grad schools (law school) will count it as an F

^
what about med schools?

ok im not gonna pass math 1a.. eff this

Is it detrimental to have a "not-pass" on our transcript? (does it significantly affect grad-school admissions or competitiveness for a job or internship?)

It won't really matter for a job, I don't think - no job I've ever applied for has requested to look at my transcript. For internships, especially ones where they take students in college or right out of college, it will matter. Many law schools definitely count NP as an F. It's pretty detrimental if you leave it as a NP and choose not to retake the class. It looks much, much better if you don't pass but then retake the course for a LETTER GRADE (if you can) and DO WELL.

i am in cs3s (2 units-p/f) right now and do to a very heavy load overall (19 units of which 16 are for a letter grade i am going to just risk a np on my transcript. i only took it so that i would be prepared for cs 61a next sem. but i havent even finished half of the quizzes/progrms i need to do. i dont plan on taking 3s again for p/np or a letter grade...hopefully 61a will review whatever i am not going to be learning in 3s anymore.

my question (i am a cog/msc double major; premed) will med schools look negatively at my np for cs3s(2 units) given the grand scheme of everything else? will they understand that i was a stupid freshman takingmn much more than i could actually handle due to overconfiedenc? i dont even directly need this class for cog sci

i am just going to stop doing the work for this class so i can atleast get a higher GPA in the other 17 units i am enrolled in than i could have with the cs3s going on...

thoughts?

Bad idea - don't risk the NP. You never know exactly how the readers will interpret that when they see your transcript. Some may be more lenient, but some may be iron-fisted. Try to get the Pass if you can.

If i get a NP in math 1a Ill get no credits. if i take math 16a. will i get no credits too or will i get 3 units.
I know if i get P in math1a and take 16a ill get no credits for 16a. but dunno what happens if i NP math 1a.

tastybeef: really, just for 2 units of NP my first sem of freshman year when i am taking 17 other units? i just dont feel i have the time to do all the work-quizzes, prgrms, etc now... :/

im taking 18 units freshman :( shoulda only taken 13 units LOL

I'm doing 13 right now (actually 12 now, since my seminar is over), and I'm struggling: math 1b and chem 1a really suck.

Waiting: if you care about how it will look on your transcript when it comes to applications for school and stuff, then yes, it will matter. If anything, you should've just dropped a class a long time ago while you had the chance. Don't risk the NP. But if you don't plan on applying to schools after college, then it's not a big deal.
