Just how important is it? (I am 10 pts under this for my top choice college, does that make it like impossible to get in without a great hook?)

The SAT test itself has a margin of error greater than 10 pts. It is in no way significant. A 50+ point shortfall, however, will become significant.

10 points under 25% or 75%?

how selective is the college?

I am worried because it is under. And the college is very competitive (their SAT range is the highest that I have ever seen...ever) (The college is Olin). I scored a 1440 (750M 690V) and they have a mid-50% of 1450-1550. Their average scores are 750M and 740V.
Do my scores essentially make me a non-competitve applicant?

No way, APPLY. Remember, not everyone scores those exact numbers. Olin can be full of people that has 1550+, that just means that there are tons of people that score 1400-1450.

I would not worry. If you don't get in, it will NOT be due to your SAT scores being 50 pts lower than their mean scores. In other words, had you managed to get a 1550, you still would not have gotten in.

They are making a big investment in your future. You just have to show them why this is a good bet. Stop obsessing about SAT scores! Good luck...

Apply. SATs are a factor, but they are only one factor.

Good luck!

I like what beck86nj said!

The SAT is only a factor. Plus, on the SAT, 50 points is really like only missing 2-3 more questions.

actually.. the SAT isnt that important...
It signifies nothing... just that how well you can tackle 4th standard mathematics....

I know a scholarship winner who got in with a 1200 (/1600)as their EC's and School grades rocked

Antarius: whether or not the SAT is a good test that indicates future success is a separate question.

random^4: have you taken your SAT IIs yet? If so, how did those go?

I think the bigger problem is that you are in the bottom 50% of applicants.

But with Olin, I think achievements on national math exams like the AIME, what you did during the summer, etc. would be a bigger deal.

hey guys what score do you need to get n the SAt's to be in the top 1% of the test takers

My SAT II's went very well (I have taken them on two different dates): I got an 800 on both maths, an 800 physics, and a 760 spanish. My only problem is that the first time i took them, i was totally unprepared and only got a 580 in the literature. Will that be bad, or do only the top 3 matter?

If you sent Olin the score from the literature test they'll see it, but I wouldn't worry about it. Your other scores are very good.

Feel free to PM anytime if you have questions about Olin.
