Really, just how important is a high score on the SAT?

For top colleges, I mean. I talked to a Duke admissions officer a couple of weeks ago, and he said that a high SAT score does not affect your chance of admission unless it is within the top 25% of scores sent by the applicants. And even then, it is only "a small plus." He placed more emphasis on the extracurriculars and the letters of recommendation.

This makes me wonder; do other upper-level colleges look at it the same way? Is it really worth moving beyond their "average score" (around 2000-2200 I'm assuming) score if it will only help you marginally?

As long as you’re above 700 for every section it’s good.

A 2400 obviously will get you a second glance.
A 2350 will be considered amazing and just as good as a 2400. But no second glance
Same goes for 2300.
