Importance of Emory Scholars program

So I read that students must be recommended by their high schools in order to be considered for this program. My school is a tiny public in Wisconsin; I had to remind my counselor where Emory was (she had only a vague idea of Emory). So there was no chance of nomination.

Anyway, I've heard the Scholars program is equivalent to an honors program at many public schools. Seeing as I didn't really have a chance at getting in, I'd like to know whether it's possible to enter the program during freshman year or a little later.

Also, is Emory Scholars very beneficial? Does it look good on the application, etc?

only two people at my son’s school applied to Emory. They both requested nomination for Emory Scholars and the GC office obliged. THey were both qualified for consideration. The forms needed for your Wisconsin GC office are all online. She can nominate…no prob…only prob is when a school has several equally good students requesting…

I forgot to say that I’ve already been admitted into the College for next fall.

Ok, so it was my fault. I didn’t even know I would be applying to Emory until December, which was passed the deadline, I believe.

So can I get in next year? Is it sort of like an honors program?

It is NOT an honors program. Scholars do not take special classes and there is no specific dorm. You only get money towards tuition, preference for classes (and dorms after the first year), and some other small perks. The only way to graduate with honors is to write a thesis senior year.
You can become a scholar after the first and second year through the Dean’s achievement scholarship. Like the program for entering frosh, the Dean’s achievement scholarship is very competitive but it looks very good on applications etc.

I think it’s not only an “honors” program but also a scholarship.

I’m planning on applying for it, though I believe its for first-year students only. It’d be best to actually check the site or email the admissions office for the real facts though.

Emory Scholars is a big-time scholarship competition for entering Frosh. A fortunate few (with Ivy-caliber stats) can earn a full ride, or heavy tuition discount. Continuing students can apply for a ‘scholarship’ but it requires a high gpa.

Looks like I will be working exceptionally hard my freshman year in order to maintain a shot for the Dean’s Achievement program. The competition for incoming freshmen is pretty much unreal. It is basically for people who belong in the top 5 universities in the nation but chose Emory instead. I sincerely doubt that I would have had a shot this first time around. My standardized test scores are not “Ivy Caliber” (2060) although my GPA and hooks are. Bottom line is, people who are hoping to get this scholarship probably have a better shot if they work hard their first year and get it through the achievement program.
