Importance of extra curriculars

How much importance does UW place on EC’s?

From what I’ve heard over and over again, since it’s not a top school and is just barely at the top 50 mark, they don’t really care, and GPA, major prep, and essays are much more important.

It all depends if you are in-state than OOS. I noticed after living in WA for the past couple years here there is a LOT of focus on the UW brand with their merchandise (windbreakers, hats, bags etc.). They established their brand in the state of Washington but not national. UW doesn’t seem to mind since it draws in revenue with people buying UW purple merchandise.

While I have not bought my own UW gear, the color purple seems kinda nice. As an in-state student it is a whole lot cheaper than going to NYU-who also has purple as one of their main colors.

UW does place importance on stuff unless you are OOS. That’s a “red-flag” according to them, I think its because UW is public rather than private and it “serves” WA state residents.

UW’s Common Data Set lists the relative importance of several academic and nonacademic factors in first-time, first-year, degree-seeking (freshman) admission decisions.

The factors listed as “very important” are rigor of secondary school record, GPA and application essay.

The factors listed as “important” are standardized test scores, extracurricular activities, talent/ability, first generation, volunteer work and work experience.

Academics first, EC’a second
