I am interested in applying as a Sophomore transfer student to various schools for the upcoming Fall 2011 year. How important are high school statistics when applying in such a situation?

There are some schools I am applying to in which I would have had a target/match/safety chance had I applied as a HS senior. However, my college GPA may be lower, because let's face it - college is hard and it doesn't help that the institution I currently attend enforces a grade deflation policy. : I currently attend a Top 5 LAC; will this help in anyway if I am applying to a school of lower rank? Will this give me any leniency (can't think of a better word) when admissions observe my college GPA?

I don't really know how to sum up my question... how do transfer chances look for me if I have a strong HS record and an average college GPA (3.33 area is the average GPA at my school)?

I am in the same boat as. I will be applying for as a transfer for the sophomore level. My college GPA is terrible but I have good high school stats. We need some help.

That’s the bad thing about grade-deflated schools - it makes it amazingly hard to transfer from them. A “B” at a grade-deflated school is easily worth a A- at a normal school, and an A at a easy school (Brown, lol).

If you are at a top-5 LAC, known for tougher grading, and you are “trading down”, there will be some understanding of a lower than stellar GPA. Depends, of course, on how much lower. 3.33… not all that bad, depending on what the courses were and what your recs look like.

what about prospective transfer students who had an average (or bad in my case – 2.0 gpa) track record in HS, but are doing really well at a state university?

That is the right track! Lots of success stories here on cc for that type of student. Do a search on “bad high school record” and terms like that.

Same situation as the OP here, applying for sophomore transfer. What if I’ve got stellar enough of HS stats that the school I’m applying to was a match, but my college GPA’s taking a hit right now out of having to adjust to the difficulty of college? In my case I’m not trading down - I’m trading somewhere between across and up.

I don’t think my recs are going to be anything amazing - the place I’m at is too huge.

I attended Tufts at the time of my application to Cornell ILR and my college GPA was 3.33. High school GPA was 3.73 from a top-tier boarding school. I was accepted (well, given a guaranteed transfer for the coming semester 'cause my app wasn’t complete until May 1… ensure that your recs arrive on time, folks) So, yes, adcoms do take into account institutional difficulty, especially if a freshman “stumbles” while adjusting to the college environment before applying to transfer.
