importance of midyear reports???

OK, I am a parent. I went to college in the '70s at a University which is in the "CC Top Universities" list here. I am going to provide the answer which I have been repeating to my kids and their friends for years. I was accepted RD and promptly got serious senioritis -- I had never had a C in my life before then, and very few Bs, and I just screwed around and didn't care: I felt I deserved it after getting into such a good school. Then in May I received a letter that read as follows (and I quote from memory but I read it so many times I memorized it):

"Because you have been accepted contingent upon your continued academic success, please contact this office immediately concerning your midyear grades."

YIKES!!! I've got to tell you, you do NOT want to receive such a letter. I was able to provide medical receipts that showed I'd been sick that quarter and had personal emergencies, and eventually they did agree to admit me... although honestly, the medical problem was not the reason I messed up, I really did just goof off. But it was one of the most scary times of my young life, and I developed an ulcer from the incident.

The moral of my story is that you should save senioritis for the summer after your senior year. ;-)

say you go from straight a's to straight b's, is that too much of a drop for stanford to rescind my admission?

Okay, okay, here is the deal:

They use this to make sure you aren't slacking off (especially so for ED people).

Ivies and other highly selective: A couple of Bs won't kill you, but several Bs or a C will. Also if you drop out of clubs, they might kick you too. Moral of the story: don't give up an ivy when because you want to get lazy.

Mid-selective: If you get accepted with Cs they probably won't drop you for trading a couple of As for Bs. Again, don't drop out of clubs, finish what you started.

Hardly selective/local: I don't know how many schools have these, but if they do it probably doesn't matter so much. They aren't really looking for the top and they tend to stay happy with what they get.

I hope this helps. Good luck to everyone, wherever you are trying to go.
