would takin an extra year of orchestra help me on my college apps?

i am in my sophomore year of highschool and i took orchestra last year which completed my requirement. i was wonderin if i should still continue being part of the orchestra (it wont harm my schedule since it is a zero period class)

if you like it...keep doing it.

lol i hate it, but i would still do it if it would help me

to be honest, orchestra is a great thing to take. Not only do you get an easy A, you also get to use it as Extra curricular. Supposely it also shows dedication.

but, if you don't like it, don't take it. Orchestra can get very very time consuming.

It won't help. Nationwide, almost 25% of HS students participate in school music programs. Hundreds of thousands take private lessons and tens of thousands develop skill levels at an all county or all State level. Participation in a orchestra will not demonstrate some special dedication. Orchestra is an elective, not an EC.

How about band + marching band? I am considering quitting as well :T

Ouch, edad. Now my years of hard work, months of focus on a college-level solo, and intense passion feel like a waste. Not really--but op, don't think in terms of "other applicants"--what do you want to do? I think any music is a good thing. And dolly, definitely do band and mb. Our band opened pre-game at the gator bowl; wouldn't trade it for the world.

It really depends on what you love...I dropped orchestra after frosh year, but took up debating and singing, and still got in early to my first choice. If you hate orchestra, drop it! It's really not worth being miserable, and colleges care more about your passion than anything else. Better to get involved in something else in your school that you love, so that your interest will come across in your apps. Ditto band...if you don't love it, don't do it! You reallllly don't need a laundry list of activities...pursue a few things you absolutely love and I promise you'll be fine. Good luck!!!

Yeah, actually, for all my ranting and raving, I have to agree w/ mochamaven. The personal bias just got in the way. :)

haha thanks. i love marching band but concert band is pretty boring..i probably like mb more for the social aspect, however. or that feeling you get after you're done with a show ^^ wish i could do mb without concert band XD or all that audition/hearings/chair pressure. and i'm studying abroad senior year, so next year would be my last chance to do band, ever. well unless i do band abroad, but that would be way different.

Hey, if you hate it, quit. Find something you do like and stick to that. Colleges see so many students with just laundry lists of meaningless activities. I don't think they care if you're in orchestra for 2 years or 3. If you have no interest in orchestra that will show on the app. If you find something you are interested in a lot, that will help you much more.

Consistency's the key.
