importance of subject test scores?

Does anyone know how much weight Yale puts into the SAT Subject Test scores? I've heard varying things, from "they just want to see you take them and not bomb it" to "they could be the tipping point of getting in vs. being rejected". Does it vary case by case?

I didn't do awful on them (700 Literature, 740 U.S. History) but I wasn't totally happy either. These scores won't detract from a high SAT score (800 CR/720 M/760 W) and a high GPA (3.95/4.0), will they?

I am by no means an expert on the admissions process at Yale, but this is how I’d guess they’d view it. At Yale, if you are unhooked, you better have a 2300+ to have a decent shot at getting accepted. More so, if you go to a smaller/unknown high school, you better be val or sal of your class.

Now, your scores are good. However, many, many people will be applying to Yale who beat you on the SAT and have 4.0s. So, its gonna hurt you to not have 750+s on your subject tests. Will it kill your chances? No, but it makes you look below average for Yale.

^i second that

Well, there’s this general understanding that 700+ is decent for the most selective schools.

Cool! Thanks for the help :)
