I know Stanford reccomends taking the Math Level 2 as one of the SAT IIs, but I am awful at math and would much rather avoid it. Would it be looked on negatively to have not taken it? Has anyone here gotten in without taking it?

Thanks

I personally don't know anyone who got in without taking the Math Level 2 SAT II. I assume, however, if your application is absolutely stellar, they will not not care.

My stats aren't so I'd better get cracking on my pre-calc.

I didn't take a Math Level 2 Subject test and was accepted Early Action. I did have a 790 on the Math SAT Reasoning test though, so that may have helped.

I didn't take the SAT II Math IIC either and was accepted Regular Decision. I also had a pretty crappy score on the Math part of the New SAT (690). But I think it was pretty clear that I was not a math person on my application and they definitely did not admit me as such.

P.S. I called the admin office when I realized that I'd forgotten to sign up for it in Dec. and the lady said that people have gotten in without it, and no she didn't know how many, and that yes, it was just supplementary and to be taken in holistically with the rest of the app.

So if we have the time (but not necessarily the skill) should we take the math 2 test? It is the only sat 2 that Stanford singles out as being important right?

Keep in mind, though, that the IC has a much nastier curve and if you get even 3 or 4 wrong you're already in the mid-700s and falling fast. On the 2C, you're still at an 800 (usually).

I also have a question about the Math IIc...

I did pretty well on my SATs (750V, 720M, 770W)... but I agree with ebonytear when I say that math isn't my favourite.

I've signed up to take the MathIIc SATII on June 3. Let's say I score somewhere between 600-700 on it... how negatively will that reflect in my overall application?

Oh- not that it matters- but I'm also thinking seriously about applying to Stanford SCEA.

I'd say it depends what you're planning to major in. If it's engineering/math/science, it's probably not going to look too good if you score 600-700. If you're a history/english/humanities person, I'd say you'd be better off taking SAT IIs in two subjects where you will score higher than 750 than take the Math SAT II. I would only take the Math SAT II if you think you'll do well in it.

Thank you so much for the advice, Collegebound36!

I'm actually not planning on majoring in anything engineering/math/science related... I'm more interested in International Relations, Political Science, English...

I'm going to buy the Kaplan Math IIc review book and see how well I think I'll do. If I'm still unsure, I'll take another test instead... but I think I'll be okay since I have almost a month to prepare.

Thanks again! :)
