Important PSAT/NMSQT Scoring Information for the NEW PSAT and National Merit

I agree the scores will be higher since there is no penalty for wrong answers. When I looked at DS17 PSAT reports from the last 2 years he was very good at skipping questions unless he knew the answer for sure. So those kids who had good scores before can perhaps guess correctly. It’s not just going to be the ones who know every answer anymore. The standardized test takers with good reasoning skills are going to be at the top too.

@Ynotgo For the reading/writing section, the practice test always had one clear correct answer, so I was confident with my choice. But on the actual test, I had multiple questions where I went back and forth between choices. Also I finished with less time, so the actual reading passage may have been a little more advanced.

As for the math, the actual PSAT questions involved more “abstract thinking”. The most difficult part of these problems were figuring out which formula/process to use. Also each problem seemed to take more steps compared to the practice test.

But honestly, who knows? I may be completely overthinking today’s test and it’s difficuly. I guess only time will tell

@TheGFG Dd thought the 2nd math section was easier than the practice test, but she spent the last several days prepping by using new SAT materials, so that may be why. (She is also a strong math student taking cal this yr.) She says she feels really confident about how the test went.

One comment that she made was that she was surprised by one of the reading passages b/c she thought it was a well-known selection.

If I missed 10 math, 5 reading, and 2 language do you think I can still qualify because I self scored and that said 211

And I don’t think the test was any easier than last years and like above posters said most people are not prepping for this test

I just took it and overall it was easier than last year’s, especially math and writing

Do some of you truly think a 228 is required for NMS? That terrifies me, as I’m only expecting 220-ish. And a 228 requirement would be miles off prepscholar’s predicted cutoff of 210 in California.
Anyways, my impressions: I thought reading was a little bit denser than practice test. Math was tricky (a lot of decimals), but generally not bad. Grammar was the easiest grammar section I’ve ever taken on a standardized test. Timing was harder than previously.

@ambitionsquared I doubt that the cutoff will be a perfect score…

Although I think prepscholar’s predictions are low I don’t think any state will be 228. I do think so many students finding the test easy will mean more points off for missed questions. No free pass for missing one like on the practice test.

@3scoutsmom @Dylan197 Any guesses for the cutoff in more competitive states? I would guess a 220 in California.

I could see that, but it’s anyone’s guess.

IMO the math and grammar sections were super easy, I wouldn’t be surprised if I aced it or missed 1 or 2. The reading one was a bit tough though, I was stumped on the second to last passage and was unsure of 2 questions, leaving me not enough time for the last passage. And I believe I missed either 4 questions on the last reading or none at all…

My son said “math no calculator was harder than the SAT practice test 1, but easier than the PSAT practice”. He finished it, but had to make a couple of educated guesses. The other sections were ‘easy’.

@FutureMMAChamp same exact thing for me

Does collegeboard monitor these forums? xD

Someone did mention if they missed 17 total questions they’d still be at 211/228, but I live in Iowa where the cutoff line will probably be 195-ish this year. I’m pretty sure I missed less than 17; I’m guessing I missed anywhere between 4-7 on reading, and maybe 10-12 total. Having high hopes for a semifinalist.

@TheGFG Yea I took the test today. Tbh, I felt like the writing was the same as the released practice test, the Math was okay (but the second section seemed a bit harder, time constraining), and the CR for me was way harder than what was on the Practice test.

The Frederick Douglass section killed me

I did but i heard the last one was wrong

Yeah Douglass section was hard and it didn’t leave me ample time for the last passage. I’m not sure, I either missed 1 or 4 on the last passage
