Says, in very fine print,

For the example on that page I can’t figure how they are coming up with the math score. Can anyone help me out with this?
They say the math score is on an 8-38 scale but the only converted score I can find is on 160-760 scale.

I showed this to DH and he thinks dividing the math score by 20 will get it to the 8-38 range. Thoughts??

The Index range should be 48 to 228

Using S18’s and S20’s scores and this method I get:

S18 score 1500 37+37+38 = 112 x 2 = 224

S20 score 1280 31+33+32 = 96 x 2 = 192

Does this look right? I think things are going to get very confusing since it seems that National Merit will be looking at “Score Indexes” instead of actual total scores.

Yes, this is what I was looking for. Thank you.

This all looks reasonable. I didn’t see a specific mention of how the math score is calculated, but dividing by 20 seems like a good guess.

So it seems that even though reading and writing is now one score, really it isn’t – as far as national merit is concerned. This is kind of what I was expecting. There was a reason they used to double the verbal score.

Now it will be interesting to see the new state-by-state cutoffs. Time will tell…
