Important q' about 3-2 program with columbia

well i wanted to major in mathematics and do med school possibly, but with this ill get mathematics AND biomedical engineering, so i guess that would help? especially from columbia...

bumppppppp

by the middle of your first semester as a sophomore, you're not gonna want to do either. Orgo is going to probably take over you life, not to mention you'll have to also complete your core. wait to start your classes and see what you'll like. It's gonna be a lot of work, and you'll quickly find out what you like and don't like to spend your time on. I assure you, if you want to go to med school, you'll take one major, cuz you want that GPA to be stellar. Any extra work you do might compramise your chances of a 4.0.

well it wouldn't really be doubling, because the first three years i'd just do core and math major....and then go to columbia and only do classes for that degree, no core there...so idk

oh and do you have to be in the honors program to do this?

No, you don't.
You should speak with Dr. Strzmeiki, he can answer your questions best, probably.

I just found this while trying to figure out whether I could take summer classes at Columbia:

Combined Plan Program Frequently Asked Questions | Columbia University Office of Undergraduate Admissions

It has a lot of information about the 3-2 program.

A lot of biomed engineering majors at Columbia find themselves in med school. Actually if I remember correctly the tendency of biomed students to move onto med school as opposed to remaining in the field is actually mentioned in the informational video on the departmental website. If you're generally interested in what biomed has to offer and don't mind the extra work (you'll probably end up taking summer courses to complete the 3-2 requirements) then in theory you probably wouldn't need to worry about pre-med as the coursework for the two tracks is very similar.

thnx asphaltninja, but do you know if it would be possible to do premed with the Earth and Environmental Engineering program?

Per Columbia's website:

"To be eligible for admission to medical school and, subsequently, to be licensed to practice medicine, students must complete certain undergraduate courses in the arts and sciences. There are some slight variations in these requirements from school to school and state to state. Therefore, the following curriculum is prescribed for students in the Postbaccalaureate Premedical Program to prepare them to train and practice anywhere in the nation:

* One year of college English or the equivalent. (Most postbaccalaureate students have completed this requirement as undergraduates and do not need to complete course work in English at Columbia.)

 • One year of college mathematics beyond precalculus, including at least one term of calculus. Statistics is recommended as the second mathematics course.

 • One year of general physics, including laboratory.

 • One year of general chemistry, including laboratory.

 • One year of organic chemistry, including laboratory.

 • One year of biology, including laboratory, and with an emphasis on molecular and cellular biology."

My advice to you if you're interested in choosing environmental engineering would be to visit that particular department's page via the search tool at the Columbia website, and check out which courses it covers. You can even find someone in the faculty through the website and ask them. Good luck to you.

is this one available to fordham students? how about finance engineering? and if so what would their supplemental majors at fordham be?

im a junior and i wanted to know if it is possible to do psych and pre-med at fordham and then biomed at columbia?
does anybody know what are the required classes for the pre-eng and the pre-med at fordham?
or would it be possible to do some premed classes at fordham and transfer the credits to columbia and take some classes?
does anyone know the smartest way to go about doing psych/premed/biomede?

im in love with fordham and columbia, they’re my dream schools. I am aware it will be lots of sleepless nights and i will have no life, not to mention summer school but i think if its possible it will be worth it. i want to go to med school after so i dont want to take 8 years just to do undergrad…

Is there anyone doing the 3-2 program that can give me some advice? I’d appreciate it.

I dont know the answer to your questions. You have to go to the specific program director or dean and ask them at Columbia and Fordham. I do know this much, Fordham has their first Cambridge Scholar (like Rhodes Scholar except at Cambridge instead of Oxford) in Mathematics. A FULL RIDE PHD for a FCLC senior graduating. He was a double major in math and science and has a 3.96gpa at Fordham. He immigrated from Pakistan several years ago and has excelled at Fordham.

This is one of the most prestigious post graduate fellowships in the world. Congrats to him and to Fordham!
