OK. When it says “one to two pages,” do they mean single spaced or double spaced? I’d assume they mean double spaced (two single spaced pages is really long), but I’m not sure. Mine is a bit less than 2 double spaced pages, and I like it a lot, but if I had another 2 pages (2 single-spaced pages = 4 double spaced pages), I’d write more.

I'm sorry that I cannot answer your question, but I also need some clarifications about the sup. essay. I am sending the online supplement and there is no word limit. Any idea how long my essay should be?

I can't answer your question either, but I just as confused. I'm at 2 pages doubled spaced myself and I'm nearly done. I guess since they didn't properly clarify, my essay will probably be slightly over two pages double spaced.

Who knows, maybe they wanted it this way. Way to confuse applicants. Heh.

Well, I already sent the essay. It was 664 words, and I suppose this is enough:)

I just finished mine and sent it in around two hours ago. It's a healthy 803 words. I trimmed it from around 857 ... all well, they didn't give a word limit. heh.

803 sounds fine. I believe anything within the 600-800 range would suffice. By the way, I sent in a supplementary essay.

"supplementary essay" as in not the one on the Supplement in addition to the common app? Haha. Sorry I'm not following. :)

i'm pretty sure i went through all of 3 pages, double-spaced, and about halfway through the 4th page - and i got in (and am now a happy sophomore). that's not to say that you should write that much, because i know that the advice they give is to follow the guidelines - but don't stress too much about the length. as long as it gets your point across, and is engaging/enjoyable to read, you should be ok. i wouldn't advise writing a single paragraph, nor would i recommend writing 5 incredibly boring, detail-filled pages... do what seems right for your topic and your style of writing.

good luck!

thanks. good luck is always welcome. :)

and if you don't mind a question ... how do you like bowdoin?

Philosophia, yes, I sent an additional essay, other than the one from the common app supplement:) Sorry, I didn't make that clear.
By the way, I am an international student. Do you know what is Bowdoin's approach toward internationals? Some colleges are really intls-welcoming (Macalester, Mount Holyoke), others not so. I was just wondering...

Okay, now I understand. :) Well a supplemental essay is cool ... what was it about? (if you don't mind me asking)

From what I know of Bowdoin (and from what people tell me), I think it's pretty welcoming to intls. Hmm, they had that whole section in the application for intl aid didn't they? (from the colleges I looked at) that's a little unusual. And Bowdoin has that Host Family Program (? Not sure about the name) to help intl students. Anyway, I'd say Bowdoin is more on the welcoming side for intls.

Hope my ramblings somehow help.

-Grace

The essay was mainly about my Bulgarian identity and Bulgarian culture. I wrote about my cultural and spritual heritage, mentioning my participation in bulgarian rites and stuff like that.

Happy New Year! :)

Hey, your essay sounds really cool. I'm sure they'll love it.

Happy New Year and best of luck for all of your colleges. :)

-Grace

Thanks! I wish you a successful and happy year as well:)

Which are the other colleges to which you are applying, btw? Just curious...

In total I applied to 5 colleges (haha, everyone tells me it's low ... but I was looking for the philosophy departments)

Brown ED (deferred) (1)

University of Vermont (accepted w/lots of scholarships but it was a safety anyway) (5)

Bowdoin (obviously. heh) (3)

Brandeis U (4)

Northwestern U (2)

and thats it really. the numbers on the side are which I would go to if I was accepted first. They're all really eclectic but I like them all for different reasons. :)

which schools are you applying to?

My list:

Mount Holyoke
Smith
Bryn Mawr
Grinnell
Macalester
Bates (ED)
Brandeis
Earlham

awesome colleges. we're both applying to brandeis. :)

good luck again. hope everything works out for you!!

I spent quite a lot of time researching schools, and I am glad I finally found those colleges.

I am sure everything will work out for you!
