<p>Hello all,
I am applying to Vassar regular decision. I emailed the Admission Office regarding the length of the supplemental essay if I were to upload a document, and they told me to not exceed 1000 characters. However, I have seen and heard about many essays considerably longer than that on this forum.
What are your opinions on this? I definitely feel I should take the Admission Office literally, but I'm wondering if the people on here who exceeded that length heard differently about the character/word limit?

<p>Oh wow, then they must have hated mine. Well, I hope not. Mine was 700some words. Maybe they meant not to exceed 1000 words?</p>
<p>My counselor told me that a good rule of thumb is no more than two pages double-spaced unless there’s a specified limit. There’s no limit set on the application so I went for it.</p>

<p>That’s what I’ve been hearing… that people are sending ones much longer than 1000 characters. </p>
<p>This is the exact response I received from Admissions, though:
“single spaced is preferable, but the essay should not go over 1000 characters.

<p>Hah, well then. My essay was not the right format. I hope the content was what they wanted though, haha.</p>
<p>I think that if you can get your point across in a minimal amount of words, go for it. I’m sure the admissions people get tired of reading these things nonstop and I’m guessing the shorter the better in some cases.</p>
<p>As an update: Just called Admissions, they say the limit is 500 characters. So, I’d strongly urge everyone reading this to keep it between 400 and 1000 characters.</p>
