Improve my SAT scores?

What would you recommend for a person who scored a low 1200(without any prep) on his first SAT attempt. How do I improve my score significantly? I have a strong believe that I can accomplish much much higher than that. I am aiming for an 1800 or better. I want to start all over again and study through all that is required to pass the test. What o I do and where should I start. Currently, I am spending 4- 5 hours a day studying for the test. I can't afford the prep classes(is it even helpful?) and so I am doing things on my own. What advice can you lend me?
