IMSA Applicant Class of 2020

Where is the summer reading list for incoming sophomores?

@TheNewmanry here https://www.imsa.edu/sites/default/files/upload/hamilton_summer_reading_sophomores_2017.pdf

I got accepted to IMSA, but there is one question I’ve had thats been bugging me. What are the people like at IMSA? What are they like compared to other schools? I want to attend IMSA for the education, but I also hold the social aspect of it to a high regard. That being said, when I think of the ‘Math and Science Academy’, I don’t really think of the most extraverted or (for lack of a better word) ‘normal’ people.

okay so the imsa social life is what you make of it. there are groups and cliques but imo everyone is pretty open and welcoming. if you come in with a ‘normal vs not-normal’ attitude and try to make everyone fit into two boxes, you’re going to have a bad time. there are a lot of extroverts esp since we all live together. everyone has their special interests but everyone is also really nice and open to each other. even when there’s drama, people are at least p civil to each other. idk how else to put it besides the social life is what you make of it. no matter what kind of school we go to, we’re still teenagers

hello, I’m going to audition for music stuff during orientation. I was wondering what do you basically do during orientation because I don’t want to miss any important info to know about if I need to go audition.

I would like to hear waitpool stories from years past.

Were you waitpooled (or do you know someone who was)?

When did you ‘get the call’ with an offer to leave the waitpool & attend IMSA?

Was it a phone call? An e-mail? Did they contact student or parent?

If you were waitpooled & didn’t get invited to attend, when did you realize that it just wasn’t going to happen?

@MargaretBennett When I was at preview day, they told us that some students just don’t show up on move-in day, and they contact people off the waiting list, even that late in the process. So I would imagine that IMSA will be contacting waitlist candidates anytime between now and late August.

@birdie02 Here is the student schedule for orientation: https://www.imsa.edu/sites/default/files/upload/2016_student_schedule_for_website.pdf

thanks @balloony ~

Hey guys, I am pretty worried about the spanish placement test.

I’m currently in spanish 1, so I haven’t covered a lot of vocabulary, and the placement test is aparantely a written exam. Do any IMSA students who currently take spanish remember what was on previous placement exams or if not, know how to prepare for one?

@bluehorse123 I think it is kind of too late to prepare for a language test… My understanding is since IMSA only
offers Spanish 2, and also a lot of people took Spanish 1 and want to continue with Spanish, IMSA has to check if your Spanish level is ok to go forward with their Spanish 2. I have heard Spanish 2 is very competitive. I hope IMSA students will give you more info on this.

@javascript

Yeah, there’s probably not a lot I can do at this point, but hey, thursday’s still a time a to cram. I think my school has a fairly decent language program, but with all the competition, I have doubts that I will be able to advance…

@bluehorse123 you know what, I did not think I will get accepted at all, and I was! so it might be a possibility you get into Spanish 2. As for me I am aiming for Mandarin… so sad I can not take Russian…

Hey so this is a IMSA StudCo member speaking. The IMSA E-Mail thing was actually an error. I believe the form should be edited just to say email, if not just enter your regular email in the form

Hi, i am also interested to hear about Wait Pool students news. Any one received Waitpool got confirmation yet?

Also, i would like to know, if EXCEL program is only for the students, who have confirmed admissions or it is also for every one from Waitpool? Does that mean any thing, in case Wait pool students are asked to join in Excel program?

Hello, I’ve recently applied for IMSA for the graduating class of 2020. I got waitlisted, but I’m concerned that perhaps IMSA only responds if you make it out of the wait list. So my question is, does IMSA contact you if you don’t make it? About when would this be?

I know that you can be called off of the wait list any day up to, and including move-in day. I’ve also heard rumors of students being pulled from the waitpool a week after school started, to replace a student that decided not to attend at that point.

So, if they do contact students to say “We will no longer be contacting you, but thanks for applying”, I’m not sure when it would be - but, it’s probably after school has been in session for a week.

Does anyone know of any waitlisted students who have been called yet for the class of 2020?

Haven’t seen anyone post anywhere that they got the call yet to move from waitpool to accepted.

Maybe everyone who was accepted with the first letters in May has decided to attend.
Or maybe some waitlisters have been called this summer, but just didn’t post anywhere about it.
Or maybe I’m just not looking in the right places.

I believe, IMSA started clearing wait list and contacting students. I guess, they may send final letter may be after few weeks of School year started based on my previous experience with other short term programs applied in the past.
