In a struggling situation...Does changing school matter to University?

Hi, I'm a High School student from Hong Kong and born in the US. I'm going to be a senior, and will go to the US apply Community College after graduate from High School. Hopefully will help me get into my dream school NYU. Will work my butt off in CC!

So here is my problem, would transferring school number of times affect my application? Starting from High School, from grade 9 to grade 10(middle of year), i'm studying in an international school which is American curriculum and same as American High School system.

Then in middle of grade 10 to transferred back to some local school in Hong Kong, the reason is because I want to try apply University in Hong Kong.
Until now end of Junior year, I planned to transfer to another school again for my senior year, because it's close to my home and it's a better environment to study and it's better quality due to many students from that school got good results from Hong Kong public exam.

However, I don't find it Hong Kong education is a good way because only every year who commit the public exam only the top 20% could get into universities in Hong Kong which is not easy at all, so I decide after High School i'm going to apply CC in US.
After I transferred back to local school my grades are very different from grades from international school. Because the passing mark in Hong Kong curriculum is 40% and they don't come with GPA in our report card. My scores in local school are kinda awful.

So after I have been surfing this forum for a while I just knew that colleges in US do count for GPA and our high school progress. But in Hong Kong they don't care about it, all are only base on public exam.

Question: Due to number of times transferring school during high school time will it worsen my application to apply college in US like NYU even if I go to CC?
Does college focus more on CC rather than high school?

Sorry about my bad English and writing, hope I could have some answers or help from your guys. If there is something which is not clear feel free to ask. Thank you.

I doubt they’ll care how many times you transfer schools, if so then just explain your situation in your personal essay.
Also, it depends on how many units/credits/hours you take at the CC. Say for example if you only take about 30 units, they’ll want to see your HS scores AND your CC’s but if you would take 60 or so units, they’ll only want to see your CC’s scores.
But I’m unsure, most 4-years (In the US) are like that but NYU could be different. I would recommend going to their website and look for “Transfer” and read any information there.

ok I see. Thanks for the help. Thank god I can explain this situation I can explain in my essay but hope they wouldn’t mind.
Yes, i might going to take at least 60 units, cuz I heard NYU safe is around 60 units for CC students.
I’ll surf this site more, thanks!

You are a US citizen who is being educated abroad. Be sure that you let each of the colleges/universities that you apply to know about your status. There may be different steps that you need to take in the application process.

Admissions offices are familiar with the educational system in Hong Kong, and will know what to do with your grades and test scores. Don’t worry about that. But do spend some time improving your English. It may make sense for you to enroll in an intensive English course for a semester before even applying to college in the US. Take the TOEFL, and see what your scores are like.

If you haven’t already done so, please read through everything at https://www.educationusa.info/</a> Then make an appointment with the counselors at the Advising Center in Hong Kong https://www.educationusa.info/PASHongKong</a> The counselors there are expert at helping students find good places to study in the US. There are many US citizen students in Hong Kong, so I expect the counselors will be familiar with any special challenges you might face.
