Hi everyone,
I am the mother of a high school Jr. interested in film and TV production. We have heard great things about Syracuse, but are confused about the two different programs. Can anyone explain the difference between the SVA and Newhouse programs? Would either of them be fine for a career in film and TV production? Syracuse is always listed as one of the top film schools in the country…do you know which of the two programs that is referring to?
Thanks so much for the help!
@traderjodie we have the same question! There are film majors both at Newhouse and the College of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA). Pretty sure that film within VPA is more studio based and results in a BFA (as opposed to a BA/BS). Wondering if it’s geared more to “artsy” than commercial film production? Or whether both are renowned and it’s simply a matter of where you see the best fit given your interests.
Newhouse has the semester in LA and the curriculum purports to prepare students for careers in any (and all) aspects of film production, from development to distribution. D2 is interested mainly in the development side of things and we think Newhouse is best suited for her interests. She’s also very interested in the Film and Television departments at NU and BU and those all seem - at least to my untrained eye! - to be comparable programs. But then she’s also spoken about CCC, Emerson, SVA and CalArts so clearly she sees some fit in those programs as well. Every single one of them is a good choice so it really is a matter of figuring out which schools to apply to and how much aid might be available.
Hope this helps!
