in-dorm internet connections

Alright, this may very well be a stupid question, but I was going over the packet I received with my admission letter and it mentioned that you could contract an in-dorm internet connection with RTS. Does this mean you would have to pay a monthly fee to have this option in addition to the connections elsewhere around campus?

Yeah. You have to pay a fee if you want in-dorm-room internet. Ditto if you want in-dorm-room cable TV. Don't remember what the monthly fee is though. If you opt to go without internet in the dorm, there are no-cost wi-fi connections in various buildings (though not the dorms), and groups of student accessible computers in various buildings that are wired to the internet that you can use without charge.

I think the tour said $131 per semester for ethernet connection...

huh... that's interesting. i think i'll just go without an ethernet connection, unless my roommates want one. might help with self-control in the area of procrastination (example: right now). haha...

that's a good point about self-control, same here (im famous for procrastinating in my school sweatdrop)...so might as well go without in-dorm connection

OH.. but i'll need my net.. having lived in diff countries.. i have this NEED to keep in touch with friends.. and i am so much of a messenger person.. i'd die without it.. i guess that means i sacrifice some shopping for internet.. but yeah..it should be ok if i share with a roommate.

haha but my roommate will have bigger worries than that.. i am indian.. so while she'll get nice indian stuff to eat from time to time.. she'd also have to bear with a lil bit of my majorly diluted indian-ness

People that are planning on buying ethernet access: the school provides free wireless connections in the common areas of the dorms, and it's quite easy to setup a wireless router in a dorm room that can cover a few nearby rooms as well. You can get together with others on your floor and "invest" in an ethernet connection to be shared by a router; not only do you have the ability to use your laptop anywhere, you also save $100!

i'm not sure the router option is that easy... my boyfriend tried that a couple years ago, and for some reason it didn't work (i'm assuming he knew what he was doing...)

Routers do work, but if someone connected to your router screws something up or gets a virus, your connection will be shut off. If you don't have an ethernet account, you won't be able to take advantage of the advanced tech support services provided by ResTech if you need (Virus removal, advanced software troubleshooting), but you still can technically share an account.

is there just one connection per room (if you get one) or do both you and your roomate need separate ones??

there are 2 jacks per room, and they'll turn them on/off depending on who pays for ethernet

You can't use a router because it might compromise the security of the WashU network. I read that somewhere while I was @ WashU last week.

They just don't permit wireless routers. Wired routers are fine by them
