I’m applying to occidental, Lewis and Clark, Denison, and Sarah Lawrence. But as for schools that are bigger and in better college towns (eg U MICH, BU, UC schools, etc…) but also more liberal, what are also good safeties?
I do think there are terrific options for the less-selective LAC (Lewis and Clark, Denison come to mind) but I think finding a less selective mid-sized school near a big city is tough. Mid-sized schools near big cities tend to be selective (NU, Tufts, Emory, Wash U). Like the idea of Richmond and Rochester but location for either of those schools really can’t compare to being near Chicago, Boston, Atlanta, or even St. Louis.
ConnCollege, Colby, Dickinson are not safeties for a 2100/4.2, although I would consider Dickinson a low match. Skidmore and Ithaca would be safeties IMHO. Take a look at Providence College and UScranton? Maybe Emmanuel in Boston or St. Michaels in Burlington (maybe UVT?)
Hampshire appears to be as liberal as a school can get (gender non-binary housing, etc), and it is outside of Boston. Also will allow you to create your own curriculum. A crazy number of students move onto competitive grad school programs there. It is also part of the consortium with other LAC in the Boston area, so one can take classes on another campus easily.
The Oregon schools will undoubtedly give you substantial merit aid,–especially if you are from the East–based on some families that we know experiences.
BTW, this is a great thread. Many great schools mentioned!
It’s probably not a safety – more of a match – but Macalester might be a really nice choice, but again, it’s an LAC. While you’re in the Twin Cities area, you can look at U Minn (but it’s big). GWU and American are probably good safeties in the DC area, and Emerson might be a good safety in Boston.
