RE: Letter of Appeal

Dear Appeal Board:

My name is _______ and I am submitting a letter to ask you to appeal my suspension of financial aide. First off I want to state that I take complete responsibility for my grades. I anticipated the fall semester to approve but things did not go as planned. I did not make Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) following my semester, the cause is no less than my own fault, but I believe the circumstances I faced led my focus away from my education. At ___________, I have learned and experienced many roles as a student attending there and with this suspension on my hands, makes me feel that I didn’t do all I was liable to do for my success. This letter is to provide the reasons why I failed to do what was needed resulting me to be put on academic suspension and allowing me to tell what can be expected from me, so this matter won’t happen again.

First of all, during my 2012 fall semester, I took many actions to help restore my academic standing. With that being said I also will admit it was a very stressful and overwhelming time in my life because I was not only going to school full time, raising two children on my own, then my cousin was sent to jail in ______. She has two children 11 and 1, in March 2012 her children went into states custody. Her oldest son whose father is deceased, was on his way to a foster home. The judge had asked his grandmother and both his aunts if they wanted to take him in. They looked at him and straight said “No” they didn’t want him, he was so devastated, scared cause he didn’t know what was going to happen. I stood up and told the judge he could go home with me.
I had never been involved in nothing like that, so I didn’t really know what to expect. Through protection and permanency he was placed with me, later on I received temporary custody of him. When returning to school in August we had a routine and doing good, until the state was wanting me to adopt him and his mother who was then in rehab threw a fit. Child protection Services was doing a lot of home visits, and court dates for reviews. I didn’t even consider on rescheduling these appointments due to their importance, causing me to miss my classes in the mid-month of October. It was a very difficult time for me to study and focus on my classes when I had to put the needs of my family before my own. I do realize that I neglected my studies and would like another chance to do better in them. I have complied a list of steps I need to take in order to obtain/ maintain higher grades and continue my success in school:

I had come to the decision to take a few classes online, and on campus so I can get caught up and graduate at the expected time 2015.

I will give my full attention to school.

Seek help immediately if I’m struggling with the skills and concepts in a class unit.

I will obtain a tutor for my most difficult classes by becoming familiar with the tutoring center on campus.

I will talk to each of my instructors personally to find out how I can do well in their classes.

I will manage my time wisely so that I can balance my family and studies together.

I will attend all my classes to take advantage of what they have to offer.

I will continue to work hard to prove that reinstating my financial Aid is not a mistake. While I greatly appreciate the chance to attend ______, I am afraid I will be unable to attend unless my financial aid is granted. I am asking that given circumstances of my situation, you, committee, will give me another chance at continuing my education. I am very serious about my future and I recognize that degree is essential in attaining a great career. Again, Thank you for taking the time to read this letter, and I assure that my education is, will continue to be my main priority. I just hope you would help me achieve my goal quicker by reinstating my financial aid.

Sincerely,

If you’re concerned about grammar, this whole thing is a mess.

I don’t know about the intricacies of appeal-letter writing, but I think this was very well-articulated. You have a very touching story and a good excuse, in my opinion. I hope everything gets resolved. Best of luck!

^thanks - I was going to try something like that but I’ve never been able to figure out how to bold/quote things and it would have looked like a mess.

But what’s the outcome of the family situation. You need to assure them that it is now under control. Also explain why you did not talk to your advisor or your professors (or if you did, then that you did) or why you didn’t ask for a leave of absence. It’s fine to acknowledge responsibility after the fact, but better if you were trying to mitigate during.

the outcome is the boy was with me almost a year, now he back in foster care… my advisor was out on vacation, and then it slipped my mind. Hopefully I can get back in this is my sophomore year, and I’m to old to start again…
