I honestly thought I had it all figured out.
I’ve been on the business track in college, which means my universtiy has a set of general education requirements and then core business requirements which are the same for all business majors, so I won’t lose any time switching from one business major to another. That’s the good news.
I was so sure I wanted to do accounting. It seemed interesting to me, and the prospects seemed good. I really didn’t know much about accounting, except I did well in my financial accounting course, but I struggled in my managerial accounting course. I guess one could say I was getting into it for the money. After this semester, I feel like maybe I shouldn’t major in accounting.
There are a number of reasons, really. First off, this semester I’ve been turned down for many accounting interships. I had a major previously that wrecked my GPA, so I am around a 2.9 cumulative. I am doing well in my classes, trying to get that GPA up, but it’s discouraging getting rejected. At my university, there is so much pressure involved in being an accounting major. Everyone seems to be doing it, and even my GPA puts me at a disadvantage despite being in organizations and other things. Everyone I have talked to regarding accounting has pushed big four and CPA down my throat, and I don’t even know if I will like accounting. There are also plenty of terrible teachers in my university’s accounting department, so trying to bring my GPA up will again be very difficult. I don’t know if I am talking my self out of it because of the challange, or because I don’t know if it is for me. Another reason to maybe stick with it is because I hear accounting is a flexible deree, and you don’t need to do just accounting with it.
Two other majors really interested me. Management Information Systems and Supply Chain Management. I plan on talking to an advisor next week about these two majors, but I’ve done some reaseach on MIS and there are some major cons such as competing against Computer Science majors. I have also never coded before, so I am not sure if I would like that. I hear my university has a great Supply Chain program, but I just don’t know enough about it. I don’t know how many hard skills I can obtain.
What I want to do is data anaylsis and analytics. I do enjoy working with programs such as excel and access.
Can anyone offer any insight?
Thanks in advance.
