I attended the Binghamton information session with my son today. The assistant dean of admissions told the juniors that they could start sending in their applications in July. Someone in the audience asked, why would you do that in July when you have to wait until April for a decision. He said that they would be changing the admission procedure again next year. I don't know if he said it would be early action or what, but not this year's procedure. (I guess this year hasn't worked our that well so far!)

Someone asked if it was too late to change your major on your application. He said that it is too late for that because the decisions will be in the mail any day now. After you get your acceptance letter, you can call the college to discuss changing your major. (I know that April 1st is around the corner, but it really seemed like he meant they're coming really soon. Wishful thinking perhaps.)

I really wanted to ask/complain about the early notification to oss, but my son didn't want me to...I bit my tongue! Now, I really wish I had gotten it off my chest because it really annoys me. Oh well!

Thank you ssmom for the information. You probably wouldn’t want to make a scene, and the probable response from the admissions person would be that they are in a “special category” and will give you an automated response. Bing can essentially do whatever they want, even if we’re the ones suffering.

By the way, I seriously DOUBT they will notify us until mid/late March. Bing is always slow, especially with admissions, so I wouldn’t expect anything until 3/20 earliest. Just my views, but I do hope that the letters are out asap. <3 SOM.

Thanks - would be AWESOME to hear this week. Appreciate the info!

I can tell you that the wait is longggggg. D applied to all her schools in October (and has already heard from 6 ot). Frustrating since she has friends that are OOS who already heard from Bing. It’s not her first choice but getting in could change things…

I have read some of the other threads…
Some instate have gotten letters…
When they log in with their B ID;s they are asked to pay a deposit…
My sons did not work…so I am super upset…
I have not gotten our letter yet…
Some of the Stats are lower than my sons…I know they look at the whole picture of the student…and his pictures was pretty good…
I also noticed the OOS stats were lower as well…and they were excepted…
I am anxious to hear and making myself crazy…
Can anyone relate?

Honestly, I would not get all upset until you get the actual letter. Sometimes the processing time is different for different people, especially with the payment and deposit.

Hey, thanks. That was great. They are ready, willing and able to take our money,so I guess my S is in.
Hang is there, GC. This is my second time through the process and it’s a lot less nerve-wracking.

Please, DO NOT attempt to discover your Admissions decision via a “backdoor” method. Until you receive an official notification via U.S. Mail, NO DECISION IS OFFICIAL. Until you are notified, it is completely within Admissions’ right to change their minds as it is still an internal decision. I am not confirming/denying whether the ability to pay a deposit means anything, as I am not in a position to officially comment on that.

Admissions decisions are generally sent via U.S. Mail, and you may receive your decision after April 1st – keep in mind that decisions mailed on the first will not reach your mailbox on that date.

Good luck to all of you, and I highly recommend that you wait until you receive notification via U.S. Mail. I understand that this is a very anxious time for all of you (trust me, I was there a little over a year ago), but you’ll do yourselves well to just patiently wait.

In the event you receive an acceptance envelope, it will be blatantly obvious that Binghamton wants you.

Doesn’t really matter to us because my S is no longer interested in Binghamton, it was just nice to know. Anyone else think that Binghamton is trying to create an illusion of ultra-exclusivity by waiting and being in the group of schools that releases their admissions decisions last? They know who is and isn’t in at this point, why drag it out any longer than necessary, creating more anxiety and tension for the kids who really want to go there?

In the words of Warner Wolf: “Give me a break!”

Imprezz, I don’t think it’s as simple as “trying to create an illusion of ultra-exclusivity by waiting”.
This year, Bing reached a new record of 31,000 applicants. It’ll take a long time to sort through the big pile.

Imprezz, you do make a valid point. Bing’s SUNY peers, such as Buffalo and Stony Brook have released decisions weeks and even months before it has. I’m sure both schools receive similar numbers of applicants, so why the wait and even preference to OOS students? Buffalo & Stony Brook released decisions to IS students alongside OOS, so why can’t this “Premier Public University” do the same?

Admissions now says letters will be mailed out between the 29th and the 1st. I just can’t believe they would wait that late. Last year people had letters by the 23rd.

I dont see why they have to wait so long. I already got both my acceptance and financial letters from Geneseo. Its added more stress to a stressful situation.

Bing is one of the last 4 schools we are waiting to hear from. This process drags out way too long - I believe unnecessarily.

The others are NYU, BU, and JHU.

In the meantime my DS has pretty made a decision on where he will be attending (loved the school, heard early and got generous merit aid) so we are not waiting with bated breath over any of them, but it would be nice to know.
