In-State, Out-of-State, or both?

Hello,
I have had a question for a while that I have been dying to ask, so here it goes!

I am a Texas resident planning on becoming a doctor. I was surfing the internet the other day and noticed that Alabama offered a really good scholarship that seemed like an excellent opportunity. If I decided to go to Alabama for undergrad in what state would I be considered a resident when applying to medical school? Texas, Alabama, or both?

Thank you for your time!

I don’t think so. Simply attending the school in a different state doesn’t make you a resident there I think…

You would likely still be a Texas resident, unless your family moves away from Texas during that time. It doesn’t matter what kind of scholarship you get, most states do not consider you a “resident” for tuition purposes if you only moved there to attend college. I know Missouri makes it pretty easy to establish residency for students, although you have to stay in the state most of the year for this to happen (so if you go home for a month or two, you can’t do it). And they are the most lax of all the states on allowing students to establish in-state residency that I have heard.
