In State Tuition at Boarding School?

This question has been bugging me for a while. I havent been able to ask anyone, and there is no forum on quora about this either.

Will I get in state tuition at a school i attend boarding school at, but do not live in?
For example, my family lives in indiana. If i attend a Connecticut boarding school, would I be given in state tuition at any given Connecticut college?

Thanks!!

Unlikely.

You may be eligible for some scholarships only given to residents. For example, I think some students attending Florida boarding schools are eligible for a Florida Bright Futures because they will get a Florida diploma.

Are you asking about in-state tuition at boarding school, in which case the answer is no because BS are private (although there are sometimes scholarships for kids from xyz state, which may or may not be where the school is.)

Or are you asking whether colleges will treat you as in-state because you went to BS there? In that case, your home state will typically be the one that determines your “in state” status.

No. Your residency state is Indiana and that’s where you can get in-state tuition for college. Your only go to school in Connecticut, you/your family don’t live and pay taxes there.

I was asking about the in state tuition of college…sorry, my question was phrased awkwardly. Thanks for the answer.

It. depends on the college. For example, our child attends a bs in California and she will qualify for in state tuition at UC schools. We did not check State ones.

Unless you have some special circumstance that’s not what the UC says: https://www.ucop.edu/residency/residency-requirements.html

It is part of the AB540 and California Dreamer Act.

We called an admissions office at a California school and asked if our child would qualify and were told yes. Could they have been wrong? Yes. Will we see in a couple of years? Yes.

Being told we could get in state did not affect our decision because we know they things can change at any time and would never count on it.

We’ve also been told by our home state colleges, the reverse is true. TX has auto-acceptance for Texas seniors who are at the top of their class (top 6% or something) and with qualifying SAT/ACT scores. We were told by laypeople that DS wouldn’t qualify because he goes to an out of state school.

Per the colleges’ AOs, though, he’s a Texas resident and so he does qualify for this program regardless of where he attends high school.
So, that may be something for OP to keep in mind.
