If I have a relative that lives in a different state could I get in state tuition after my first year in a university in that state?
Depends on the residency rules for that state.
No.
Your residency in a state is based on where your PARENTS live.
My whole family lives in Ohio…all of my sisters, cousins, nieces, nephews, etc. My kids were not eligible for instate tuition there…because we live in another state.
Oh…and if you want to establish instate residency for tuition purposes, planfor, your whole family to move to the new state at least 12 months BEFORE you enroll in college.
There are a couple of states where the process is a little easier…but with those…you would need to sever ALL ties with your previous state…and that would include taking money from your family to attend college.
Which state does your relative reside?
For in state tuition policy, it varies from school to school even within the same state. However, having a relative living there alone would never grant you in state status. There are exceptions in some situations, for example, if the relative has been your custodial guardian and you went to high school in that state.
Generally, no. Ask the school directly.
