In-state (USF/UM) or Out of State or IVY Program (regular track)

I am a Florida resident with stellar credentials. Please assume that I am quallified for all three options. I am confused as to which one of the three options I should pick.

1) USF Honors Medical Program with Florida residency and pursue the 7 year medical track. Do the same at University of Miami with added cost.
Pros: USF is so attractive since they give me almost full ride for tuition.
Cons: With surgery residency in my mind, only less than 15% gets into surgery spots when compared to 35% from Univ. of Miami.

Note: I know some of my old freinds in USF and UM accelerated programs and they have sub-par credentials when compared to me. I hate to sound like a haughty person but the fact is I am not impressed with the quality of admissions at USF/Univ. Of Miami. That is why I am little reluctant to apply.

2) I am wondering why I should limit my choices to apply only for University of South Florida or Univ. Of Miami accelerated programs. I am considering Rice/Baylor, Northwestern HPME etc.
Pros: Good medical program with good prospects of getting good residency spots
Cons: Cost and level of competition. Do they offer any financial aid at all in these accelerated programs?

3) Pick IVY Program and purse medical school in the normal track and call it a day.
Pros: Great degree from the best program and get into the best to above average med school
Cons: Uncertainty of medical school admission and compete with others to excel in MCAT and other junk. Extra one year of university.

What do you all think? Can anyone publish a table with all accelerated schools and incoming STA scores, cost of education and number of spots? Thanks very much

Buy the MSAR book and they have the latest stats for everything you need in the first few pages. It’ll have the average SAT and gpa for each BS/MD program, the requirements, the number that apply and get interviewed, the size of the incoming class, the tuition, etc.

Deciding which program to go to is something you should think about only after getting in. Otherwise, it’s just daydreaming on your part.

Also since you asked about financial aid at Rice and Northwestern… If someone is in the Rice/Baylor program they are likely to get a merit scholarship on top of Rice’s already cheaper tuition. Northwestern’s financial aid on the other hand hasn’t been so good lately. Quite a few people that have gotten in turned HPME down due to cost.

Also when I interviewed at UM’s BS/MD program last year they said the average SAT for interviewees was 1500/1600. I don’t know what SATs your friends in the program had but this is probably comparable to ivies. I don’t know about USF’s program’s stats because I have no experience with it.

It should be possible to match into a general surgery residency out of any US medical school because it’s not the most competitive of specialties to match into. It doesn’t really matter that more students match into one specialty than the other because the choice of specialty depends on the students themselves. Just because USF has fewer going into surgery than UM doesn’t mean that it’ll hurt your chances of going into surgery to go to USF, it just means that fewer students in that school wanted to go into that specialty. If you have the right board scores and determination, you can match into surgery from either USF or UM or any other US school.

Be aware that you will need to take the MCATs for these two programs. Look at the requirements to stay in. Find out how many students actually make it through to the med school part. I believe someone said the USF program has only 20% of the peoople that start out going on to the med school.
