In state?

So with all of this talk about how hard it is to get in out of state...is it really that much easier in state? Can someone tell me the difference?

its something like 80% of the freshmen class has to be in state, just the freshmen class. so therefore they can't admit all the qualified people who happen to be out of state as they would like. Thats why its easier to get in being in state versus out of state, but that doens't mean they'll accept every in state person that applies.

Whats good for instate....i went to high school in a really competitive high school in maryland...ranked one of the best in the nation and did well on my sat's..but i can apply as instate cause my dad lives and works in North Carolina...is the difference in the scores for admitted instate students that much lower than out of state?

About a 100 point difference, I'd say. It's mid-50% SAT is 1190-1390, that is for in state and out of state. When I visited Tuesday and went to the Q&A session w/ an adcom, she said "1300s is when it gets serious" w/ out of staters. A ton of people from my HS have gotten in w/ 1200s.

only 18% of the acceptees can be out of staters, the rest 82% HAS to be from the state of North Carolina. In the class of 2008, there are only 17% out of staters. The applicant pool is very competitive and strong because of the quota, and because of this limited space, the admissions people will choose only the cream of the crop, making it very hard to get into the university out of state.

I was looking at someones stats, and this person had a 1370 SAT, 3.86 weighted gpa, and went to one of the best schools in the country, and in the end got rejected from UNC. this shows how difficult it is get accepted.

Like mradio said, if you have less than a 1300, the odds are VERY against you in getting accepted into UNC. They even sometimes reject people w/ 1500s.

UVa is a LITTLE bit easier to get into. Even though the appliacant pool is a little bit stronger, they have to quotas, and thus 30% of the people in the university are from out of state as compared to the 17% at UNC.

for instate, it is much more easier to get into UNC. a 1100+ will help you out, and with a 1250+, you will most likely get in if you have decent ECs, Recs, and Essays...

yeahhh guys ok im from in state, just to give a different perspective. in all honestly, its easy as **** to get into unc from in state. thats basically why i dont want to go there, everyone from my highschool goes there. anyways yeah, all the slackers from my highschool are going to get in and going to go there, even though it is an EXTREMELY competitive highschool, the majority of the kids will get in even if theyve sat on their a$$ all of highschool. i know it sucks, but thats the deal. sorry if ive discouraged anyone...but you guys still have a really awesome chance, im sure.
